Clos des Chênes is named after an ancient oak forest that disappeared centuries ago and is considered by many as the greatest site in Volnay. The vineyard is on marl-limestone soils, which give the wine its power and ability for long aging. Domaine François Buffet has two parcels here: “young vines” around 50 years old and old vines around 80 years old, lending concentration and natural complexity. The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was mixed, with a cool, rainy summer until mid-August, then a heat wave that accelerated ripening, resulting in wines with rich structure, a blend of freshness and roundness. Wines are matured in barrel over 22 months, with one racking in the summer.

Tasting Notes
The wine is described as “tannique, tout en conservant une très belle finesse séduisante” – tannic, yet retaining a very beautiful, seductive finesse. The nose is expressive, full of fruit and floral notes, with a dark, spicy side. On the palate, it has a silky, tannic bite, buckets of fruit, and a long, peppery finish. A related 2023 Volnay (Champans) from the same domaine shows lifted aromas of red cherries, crushed strawberries, and a whisper of violet, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a saline minerality leading to a persistent, spice-kissed finish.

Serving and Cellaring
Serve at 17–18°C. The wine has great aging potential due to its terroir and 18 months of oak aging. A similar 2023 Volnay 1er Cru from another producer has a drinking potential of 8 years. It pairs ideally with oeufs en meurette (eggs in red wine), white meats, risotto with morel mushrooms, roasted poultry, and medium-aged cheeses.
