Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Burghound 90-93 pts
- 90-93 Points (Sweet Spot / Outstanding) - Burghound (Allen Meadows): Once again the nose is firmly reduced and revealing essentially nothing of interest. There is though a really lovely sense of energy to the detailed and strikingly textured middle weight flavors that exude evident minerality on the precise, moderately austere and persistent finish that is shaped by dense but fine tannins. This is a lovely wine but one to buy and put away for at least 5 years and it should easily repay a decade plus.
- The Majestic Terroir of Clos du Cras Long: Located at 256 meters elevation with east and southeast exposure, *Clos du Cras Long* features limestone benches interbedded with marl and pebbles. This unique geological makeup provides exceptional drainage and yields a broader, more structured expression of Pinot Noir than typical Givry sites.
- François Lumpp’s Benchmark Winemaking: Universally revered as the gold standard of Givry, the Lumpp family practices organic-minded viticulture and strict hand-sorting. The grapes are 100% destemmed and undergo gentle cold maceration before natural fermentation, followed by aging in fine French oak barrels to polish the firm tannins while locking in the site's intense mineral core.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir estate-harvested from the iconic Clos du Cras Long Premier Cru vineyard in Givry.
- A radiant 2023 expression combining impressive mid-palate density with energetic limestone minerality.
- Crafted by François Lumpp, the undisputed benchmark domaine of the Côte Chalonnaise.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep ruby core with purplish highlights at the rim.
- Nose: Intensely fragrant and complex. It opens with aromas of ripe raspberries, dark Pinot fruit, and crushed anise, layered over notes of menthol, dried rose petals, and subtle exotic tea.
- Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and dense. The entry delivers a rich wave of ripe berry fruit supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and a subtle mineral streak. Driven by a fresh thread of natural acidity, it carries into a long, sappy, and serious finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–16°C. A gentle cellar-like chill focuses the rich berry fruit and keeps the firm structure smooth.
- Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended if opening early to allow the powerful aromatics and tannin structure to uncoil. Cellar-worthy over the next 10 to 15 years.
- Western Pairing: Bœuf Bourguignon, roasted duck breast, pan-seared venison, herb-crusted rack of lamb, or wild mushroom tarts.
- Asian Pairing: Peking duck, braised beef brisket, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), or five-spice roasted pork.
