Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Burghound 89-92 pts
- 89-92 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): Firm reduction overshadows the underlying fruit today. By contrast, there is reasonably good punch to the succulent and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as dense or powerful, all wrapped in a dusty, youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly warm finish that could use better depth so at least a few years of keeping should help.
- The Iconic Terroir of Clos Jus: Steeply terraced on a full south/southeast-facing slope with shallow limestone and iron-rich red clay soil, *Clos Jus* is widely acknowledged as the finest single vineyard in Givry. The low-yielding vines produce small, intensely concentrated berries with incredible aromatic lift and silk-draped tannic structure.
- François Lumpp’s Benchmark Winemaking: Universally revered as the gold standard of Givry, the Lumpp family practices organic-minded viticulture and strict hand-sorting. The grapes are 100% destemmed and undergo gentle cold maceration before natural fermentation, followed by aging in fine French oak barrels to polish the chiseled tannins while locking in the site's intense mineral core.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir estate-harvested from the legendary Clos Jus Premier Cru vineyard in Givry.
- A radiant 2023 expression combining floral elegance, black raspberry fruit, and limestone purity.
- Crafted by François Lumpp, the undisputed benchmark domaine of the Côte Chalonnaise.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Luminous, deep ruby-red core with energetic crimson highlights at the rim.
- Nose: Intensely floral, expressive, and perfumed. It opens with aromas of wild black raspberries, ripe cherries, and dried rose petals, accompanied by hints of fine wood spice, tea leaf, and crushed chalky earth.
- Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and remarkably silky. The entry delivers a succulent core of dark berry fruit that glides over fine-grained, polished tannins. Driven by vibrant limestone acidity, it finishes exceptionally long, focused, and harmonious.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle cellar-like chill highlights the bright berry purity and preserves its delicate floral perfume.
- Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended to allow the intricate aromatics and structure to open in the glass. Cellar-worthy over the next 10 to 15 years.
- Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast with berry reduction, pan-seared veal cutlets, herb-crusted rack of lamb, or wild mushroom tarts.
- Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), soy sauce chicken, or delicate pan-fried pork dumplings.
