Ethereal Red Fruit, Floral Perfume, and Powerful Premier Cru Finesse

The 2022 Domaine François Lumpp Givry 1er Cru "Craipillot" (Crausot) is a deeply impressive, aromatic, and beautifully structured red Burgundy that showcases why this estate is considered the undisputed benchmark of the Côte Chalonnaise. Sourced from a mid-slope Premier Cru site rich in limestone gravels, this cuvée combines the sun-ripened generosity of the 2022 vintage with a cool, mineral-driven elegance. It leaps from the glass with an explosive nose of wild raspberries, red currants, and black cherries, woven with candied violet, sweet spices, and subtle toasted French oak. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, velvety, and vibrant, delivering a concentrated core of red fruit supported by refined, fine-grained tannins that carry into a long, youthfully firm, and mineral-infused finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound 90-93 pts
Jasper Morris 90 pts
  • 90-93 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): Ripe and even fresher aromas derive more from the red side of the fruit spectrum while displaying background hints of earth and spice, especially anise. There is fine density to the utterly delicious medium weight flavors that possess a powerful yet refined texture, all wrapped in a lingering, firm and youthfully austere finale. This is also recommended.
  • 90 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): Glowing mid ruby red. The forceful limestone character of Crausot is immediately apparent. This is elegant all the way through, a very straight red fruit, less complete at the back but persistent and this is a flavour I really like – spring time wine, served quite fresh. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted Apr 2024.
  • The Stony Terroir of Crausot: Situated on a prime mid-slope parcel with south/south-east exposure, *Crausot* features shallow clay-limestone soils strewn with small limestone rocks. This stony soil gives the Pinot Noir vines excellent drainage, yielding small, concentrated berries that impart a distinct mineral tension and aristocratic structure to the wine.
  • François Lumpp’s Benchmark Winemaking: Universally revered as the gold standard of Givry, the Lumpp family practices organic-minded viticulture and strict hand-sorting. The grapes are 100% destemmed and undergo gentle cold maceration before natural fermentation, followed by ageing in select French oak barrels to polish the fine-grained tannins without masking the site's limestone character.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir estate-harvested from the distinguished Crausot Premier Cru vineyard in Givry.
  • A radiant 2022 expression combining sun-ripened red berry richness with limestone minerality.
  • Crafted by François Lumpp, the undisputed benchmark domaine of the Côte Chalonnaise.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, luminous ruby-purple core with vibrant crimson highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Explosive, lifted, and complex. It opens with aromas of wild raspberries, red currants, and dark berries, accompanied by notes of fresh violet petals, fine wood spice, and crushed limestone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully textured. The attack brings a concentrated wave of red and dark berry fruit, underpinned by refined, fine-grained tannins. A lively thread of limestone acidity carries the rich fruit into a long, youthfully firm, and mineral-driven finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle cellar-like chill highlights the bright berry purity and preserves its floral aromatics.
  • Decanting: A brief 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended if opening early to allow the structured tannins and aromatics to open in the glass. Cellar-worthy over the next 8 to 12 years.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast with cherry reduction, pan-seared venison cutlets, herb-crusted pork tenderloin, or wild mushroom tarts.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), soy sauce chicken, or delicate pan-fried pork dumplings.
