Ethereal Red Fruit, Crisp Tension, and Refined Premier Cru Elegance

The 2022 Domaine François Lumpp Givry 1er Cru "Petit Marole" Rouge is a remarkably precise, high-toned, and beautifully detailed red Burgundy from one of the estate's finest Premier Cru sites. Sourced from east-to-southeast facing slopes rich in limestone and marl, it opens with pure aromas of fresh red raspberries, wild red currants, and subtle floral spices underlaid by fine oak. The palate is medium-bodied and tension-filled, delivering crisp red berry fruit supported by fine-grained, chiseled tannins.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound 91-93 pts
Jasper Morris 90 pts
  • 91-93 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): A spicier if otherwise similar nose introduces even more finely textured, suave and vibrant flavors that display excellent length on the firm, serious and youthfully austere finish that is impressively long. I very much like the balance and this is an excellent wine that will have no trouble repaying a decade, or even more, of keeping.
  • 90 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): Not especially deep in colour but fresh and vivid. A clean meatiness, almost blood orange, then vigorous fruit which spreads to the back of the palate. A very attractive aftertaste, growing steadily. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted Apr 2024.
  • The Precise Terroir of Petit Marole: Situated at an elevation of 260 meters with an east-southeast orientation, *Petit Marole* sits on upper Oxfordian limestone separated by thin layers of marl. This stony, well-drained soil provides Pinot Noir vines with exceptional mineral tension, resulting in a lighter-footed, high-toned, and aromatic expression.
  • François Lumpp’s Benchmark Winemaking: Universally revered as the gold standard of Givry, the Lumpp family practices meticulous organic-minded viticulture and strict hand-sorting. The grapes are 100% destemmed and undergo gentle cold maceration before natural fermentation, followed by aging in fine French oak barrels to polish the chiseled tannins without masking the site's limestone purity.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir estate-harvested from the distinguished Petit Marole Premier Cru vineyard in Givry.
  • A crystalline 2022 expression combining red berry purity with energetic limestone minerality and crisp tension.
  • Crafted by François Lumpp, the undisputed benchmark domaine of the Côte Chalonnaise.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Translucent, bright ruby-red core with subtle crimson highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Fresh, lifted, and airily perfumed. It opens with aromas of wild raspberries, red currants, and red cherries, accompanied by notes of rose petals, fine wood spice, and crushed limestone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and linear. The attack brings a crisp wave of bright red fruit that glides over fine-grained, chiseled tannins. An energetic spine of natural acidity carries the wine into a long, youthfully austere, and mineral-driven finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle cellar-like chill highlights the bright berry purity and preserves its delicate floral aromatics.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute decant is recommended if opening early to allow the structured tannins and aromatics to open in the glass. Cellar-worthy over the next 8 to 12 years.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast with cherry reduction, pan-seared veal cutlets, herb-crusted pork tenderloin, or wild mushroom tarts.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), soy sauce chicken, or delicate pan-fried pork dumplings.
