Ripe Red Cherries, Flinty Undertones, Firm Structure, and 1er Cru Finesse

Jane Eyre’s 2018 Santenay Les Gravières 1er Cru is a masterful debut from this prestigious terroir. Crafted from old vines, it blends Santenay’s inherent muscularity with Jane's signature elegance. With an inviting bouquet of ripe red cherries, a flinty undertow, and delicate spice from 30% whole-cluster fermentation, this medium-bodied Pinot Noir delivers a beautifully textured, structured palate with remarkable length and aging potential.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris MW 89-92 pts
  • 89-92 Points - Jasper Morris MW: 3 barrels, 1 new, from certified organic and biodynamic vines, 30% whole bunch. Gorgeous dense mid purple with classy fruit on the nose. Ripe certainly (13.5%) but very engaging, and with a welcome freshness at the back. I like the intensity and energy here. Tasted Dec 2019 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir sourced from the esteemed Les Gravières 1er Cru, featuring mature 40- and 70-year-old vines.
  • Grown on classic limestone and marl soils with a high proportion of gravel, yielding structured wines with distinct minerality.
  • Fermented with 30% whole clusters to provide aromatic lift, fresh herbal spice, and structural backbone to the generous 2018 fruit.
  • Élevage completed in French oak barrels (one new barrel out of four, equating to 25% new wood), bottled in December 2019.
  • The warm 2018 vintage provided ample ripeness and concentrated red cherry fruit, perfectly balanced by Jane Eyre's elegant, hands-off approach.

Tasting Notes

Pours a medium, vibrant ruby. The nose is warm and invitingly nutty, opening with an abundance of ripe red cherry, crushed raspberry, and a distinct flinty undertow alongside subtle whole-cluster spice. On the palate, it is generous yet firmly focused, balancing the lush fruit of the 2018 vintage with the inherent grip of Les Gravières. The tannins are firm and slightly chewy, driving toward a persistent, terroir-driven finish marked by crushed stone and elegant length.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 60°F (15°C) in a large Burgundy bowl to allow the complex aromatics to fully integrate.
  • Decanting: Needs 30–45 minutes of aeration to soften the structured tannins. Pair beautifully with roasted duck, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes. Drink from 2024 through 2032.
