Ethereal Floral Lift, Crystalline Red Berries, and Aristocratic Finesse

The 2021 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is an exceptionally graceful, airily perfumed, and finely detailed red Burgundy that captures the pure, cool-climate precision of the vintage. Sourced from premier sites in Chambolle, it opens with high-toned aromas of fresh wild raspberries, red cherries, and dried rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and energetic, offering crystalline red fruit framed by fine, cashmere-soft tannins.

Terroir & Winemaking Reality

  • Premier Cru Pedigree of Chambolle: Celebrated for producing the most delicate, floral, and lacy Pinot Noir in all of Burgundy, Chambolle-Musigny's Premier Cru sites rest on thin, active-limestone soils. In the cool 2021 vintage, this limestone bedrock imparted rare transparency, granting the wine incredible floral lift and a fine, silken tannic spine.
  • Delicate Maison Drouhin Craftsmanship: Under the direction of winemaker Véronique Drouhin, the hand-harvested fruit underwent careful sorting and complete destemming. Fermentation in open wooden vats preceded aging for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels (around 20% to 25% new), subtly framing the high-toned 2021 red fruit without overshadowing its lace-like elegance.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir estate- and grower-harvested from thin clay-limestone Premier Cru plots in Chambolle-Musigny.
  • Crafted by the historic Maison Joseph Drouhin, renowned globally for their pure, organic-minded, and delicate style.
  • A beautifully balanced, high-toned 2021 expression offering crystalline red fruit, cashmere-soft tannins, and long aging potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Translucent, bright ruby-red core with delicate garnet reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Fragrant, open, and airily perfumed. It opens with aromas of fresh wild raspberries, red cherries, and dried rose petals, accompanied by subtle notes of tea leaf, gentle wood spice, and damp chalky earth.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and remarkably silky. The entry brings a vibrant line of crunchy red berries that glides over fine-grained, cashmere-soft tannins. Driven by energetic natural acidity, it finishes long, precise, and mineral-accented.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle chill highlights the bright red fruit purity and protects its delicate floral perfume.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute decant is recommended if opening early to allow the high-toned aromatics to open fully. Cellar-worthy over the next 10 to 15 years.
  • Western Pairing: Roast duck breast with cherry reduction, pan-seared veal cutlets, herb-crusted pork tenderloin, or mild soft cheeses.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), soy sauce chicken, or delicate pan-fried pork dumplings.
