Monumental White Peach, Crushed Flint, and Sovereign Grand Cru Precision

The 2022 Joseph Drouhin Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a majestic, colossal, and masterfully proportioned white Burgundy that represents the pinnacle of Chardonnay excellence. Sourced from south-southwest facing high-altitude slopes on the iconic Hill of Corton, it unfolds with soaring aromas of white peach, lemon oil, toasted hazelnuts, white lilies, and crushed flint minerality. The palate is full-bodied, dense, and electric, balancing rich Grand Cru amplitude with laser-like acidity and an endlessly persistent, chalky finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Jasper Morris MW 92-96 pts
Wine Advocate 92-94 pts
  • 92-96 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): From domaine fruit, picked on 26th August. 35% new wood from various forests. A deeper lemon yellow. Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. I don’t find it showing at its best today but I suspect that there is more to this to emerge later. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2023.
  • 94-96 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine) derives from vines in Languettes, a south-facing climat that produces a ripe style of wine. Delivering aromas of sweet yellow orchard fruit, confit citrus and buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and ample, with a layered, seamless profile.
  • The Renowned Corton-Charlemagne Terroir: Perched near the summit of the Hill of Corton in Ladoix-Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, this Grand Cru site features steep slopes with pale, marl-rich limestone soils. The high altitude preserves vibrant acidity and imparts an unmistakable flinty minerality to the Chardonnay.
  • Masterful Drouhin Craftsmanship: Cultivated organically and biodynamically, the grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented slowly in French oak barrels (25% new). Aged for 12 to 15 months, the wine captures the grandeur and longevity of Corton-Charlemagne while preserving Drouhin's signature style of restraint and elegance.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay harvested from organically and biodynamically farmed Grand Cru vineyards on the Hill of Corton.
  • A monumental 2022 vintage offering white peach, lemon oil, toasted hazelnut, and crushed flint minerality.
  • Crafted by Maison Joseph Drouhin, boasting 15 to 25+ years of exceptional cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Pale golden-straw with luminous greenish-yellow reflections.
  • Nose: Expansive, intense, and complex. It opens with aromas of ripe white peach, yellow orchard fruit, and orange oil, layered with white lily perfume, toasted hazelnuts, fresh pastry, and crushed flint minerality.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and deeply concentrated. The entry brings a satiny wave of orchard fruit sap that glides across a densely structured mid-palate, propelled by vibrant, chiseled acidity into an endlessly long, chalky finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 12–14°C to allow its dense texture and complex Grand Cru aromatics to unfold gracefully.
  • Decanting: A generous 45-to-60 minute decant is highly recommended if opening young to let its mineral power open fully. Cellar-worthy through 2042+.
  • Western Pairing: Butter-poached lobster, pan-seared turbot with beurre blanc, roasted Bresse chicken with truffles, or veal sweetbreads.
  • Asian Pairing: Steamed spotted grouper with ginger and scallions, braised abalone, butter-fried king prawns, or Peking duck.
