Crafted by Maison Joseph Drouhin, a distinguished Burgundy house founded in 1880, the 2023 Musigny Grand Cru is a pure Pinot Noir sourced from the estate’s 0.68-hectare holdings in the prestigious Musigny vineyard, a grand cru site in Chambolle-Musigny at 250-270 meters elevation. This east-facing slope features chalky brown soils with pebbles, fostering elegance and finesse. Hand-harvested grapes, with 20-50% whole clusters depending on vintage conditions, undergo 2-3 weeks of fermentation and maceration in small open vats using indigenous yeasts, followed by gentle pressing and separation of press fractions. The wine ages for 16-20 months in French oak barrels, including 30% new, to integrate complexity while prioritizing terroir expression. This biodynamic approach, certified since 2009 and rooted in low-yield viticulture, captures the 2023 vintage’s exceptional generosity—marked by one of Burgundy’s hottest years, yielding ripe, concentrated fruit with smooth, complex palates—resulting in a monumental wine of profound harmony and longevity.

Tasting Notes

This Grand Cru displays an intense ruby hue with aromas of ripe cherries, plums, rose petals, and exotic spices, accented by hints of forest floor, orange zest, and damp earth. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet supple, offering layered flavors of dark raspberry, black cherry, mocha, and subtle garrigue, supported by fine, silky tannins, lively acidity, and a long, persistent finish with mineral and black tea nuances.
