From Château L'If in Bordeaux's Saint-Émilion on the Right Bank, the 2012 is a refined blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc sourced from 8 hectares of clay-limestone plateau vineyards that impart elegance and vibrancy. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2012 vintage—marked by moderate conditions yielding concentrated yet fresh fruit—undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by 12-16 months' aging in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% one-year-old) to enhance integration and finesse. Purchased by Jacques Thienpont in 2010 and run by Cyrille Thienpont, this production yields a deep ruby wine with garnet edges and poised intensity.
Tasting Notes A stylish, sensuous Saint-Émilion with enticing licorice scents and vivacious black fruit, offering tightly wound chalky tannins, linear crispness, and a refreshing spicy endnote. The nose offers detailed, vivacious black fruit mixed with black olive and licorice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and harmonious, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and flavors of plum, spice, and mineral earthiness, leading to a long, crisp finish.
Awards and Accolades The 2012 Château L'If earned 92 points from Wine Advocate for its enticing licorice scents, detailed vivaciousness, and splendid Saint-Émilion elegance.
Serving and Cellaring Serve at 16-18°C with 45 minutes of decanting to enhance aromas. Ideal with grilled beef, roasted lamb, or aged cheeses. Enjoy now through 2030, developing greater leather and earthy nuances over time.
