Ripe Blackberries, Cedar Spice, Dark Cocoa, and Rioja Alavesa Old-Vine Power

The 2019 Bodegas Luis Cañas Reserva "Selección de la Familia" is an opulent, deeply concentrated red crafted from old-vine parcels in Rioja Alavesa. Made from Tempranillo complemented by other indigenous varieties, it opens with rich aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, roasted spices, and vanilla bean. Full-bodied, velvety, and layered, it balances concentrated dark fruit against fine-grained, structured tannins and fresh Atlantic acidity, finishing long, savory, and polished.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 91 pts
  • 94 Points - James Suckling: A dense and concentrated reserva with aromas of walnuts, dark cherries and a touch of cedar. Full-bodied, deep and satiny but focused and delineated. Long, cedary finish. Better from 2026.
  • Old-Vine Rioja Alavesa Terroir: Sourced exclusively from hillside parcels with an average vine age of over 50 years, located around Villabuena de Álava and neighboring villages. Situated on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, the chalk-rich, calcareous clay soils and cooler microclimate deliver wines with striking color intensity, fresh natural acidity, and deep mineral backbone.
  • The "Selección de la Familia" Philosophy: Conceived by Juan Luis Cañas as an homage to his family's winemaking heritage, this cuvée represents a strict selection of only the estate's top old-vine fruit. Matured for approximately 20 months in 50% new French and 50% second-use French and American oak barrels, it marries modern Rioja extraction and velvety richness with classic Alavesa restraint.

Highlights

  • Roughly 85% Tempranillo blended with 15% other indigenous varieties from 50+ year-old vines in Rioja Alavesa.
  • Aged approximately 20 months in high-grade French and American oak barrels.
  • From the stellar 2019 Rioja vintage; prime drinking window now through 2038+.

Tasting Notes

Deep black-plum with a dense ruby rim, it opens with pure aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and cassis, seamlessly framed by roasted coffee beans, dark cocoa, sweet vanilla, and crushed cedar spice. The palate is full-bodied, velvety, and dense, enveloping concentrated dark fruit in a framework of ripe, fine-grained tannins and balancing acidity, concluding on a persistent, savory, and finely toasted finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glassware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 45 minutes to 1 hour to let its rich oak spice and deep fruit unwind. Best enjoyed now through 2038+.
