Black Cherries, Sweet Cedar, Cocoa, and Rioja Alavesa Old-Vine Harmony

The 2020 Bodegas Luis Cañas Reserva "Selección de la Familia" is a refined, beautifully poised Spanish red from old hillside vines in Rioja Alavesa. Crafted primarily from Tempranillo with other native varieties, it reveals alluring aromas of black cherries, dark plums, cocoa, and sweet cedar spice. Medium-to-full-bodied and velvety, it combines succulent dark fruit with polished, fine-grained tannins and vibrant Atlantic acidity, concluding on a persistent, savory, and elegant finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 93 pts
  • 93 Points - James Suckling: This has dark chocolate, dark cherry, cedar and smoke aromas. Medium- to full-bodied with flesh and a compact feel. Balanced fruit, tannins and freshness. This is partly from a very old clone brought from Bordeaux. Drink now or hold.
  • Old-Vine Rioja Alavesa Climat: Sourced from small, hillside plots averaging over 50 years of age around Villabuena de Álava. Perched at 500+ meters elevation along the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, the limestone-rich, calcareous clay soils and cooler microclimate deliver vivid red and dark fruit delineation, fresh natural acidity, and refined structural tannins.
  • The "Selección de la Familia" Precision: Conceived by Juan Luis Cañas as the estate's premier expression of their best old vineyards. Harvested by hand with double sorting tables (bunches and individual berries), the wine undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation followed by approximately 20 months in high-grade French and American oak barrels, balancing modern fruit focus with classical Rioja longevity.

Highlights

  • Roughly 85% Tempranillo and 15% other indigenous varieties from 50+ year-old vines in Rioja Alavesa.
  • Aged approximately 20 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels.
  • A fresh, beautifully proportioned 2020 vintage; prime drinking window 2025 through 2036+.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet with a luminous ruby rim, it opens with pure, fragrant aromas of black cherries, dark plums, and wild raspberries, complemented by hints of sweet tobacco, dark cocoa, cedar spice, and cracked pepper. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, silky, and energetic, carrying vibrant dark fruit over a bed of polished, fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity, concluding on a persistent, savory, and delicately toasted finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glassware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 30 to 45 minutes to allow its cedar spice and fruit layers to fully integrate. Best enjoyed from 2025 through 2036+.
