Chiseled, Mineral-Driven, and Distinctly Taut

Produced by the iconic Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, "Les Taillepieds" is a Premier Cru Pinot Noir prized for its intense stone and mineral characteristics. Situated on a steep, high-elevation slope with thin, pebbles-laden limestone soils, this site naturally yields a leaner, more vertical, and chiseled profile than softer Volnay vineyards. The warm and sunny 2020 vintage adds a layer of dark fruit concentration and firm tannic grip to the mid-palate, while the vineyard's elevation keeps the acidity crisp and energetic. It is a medium-bodied red wine with a focused, tight framework built for long-term development.

Vineyard & Estate Background

  • 93-96 Points Star Rating ★★★★★ – Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy "Rich deep crimson purple. There is a spectacular nose here, with excellent concentration. This is high class ripe pinot, with an excellent sense of balance. The fruit completely fills the mouth, with superb purity, and just the right thread of acidity, balanced and profound. Thus far, this is the most backward wine in the line-up and will make a thrilling Taillepieds in due course. Tasted Oct 2021."
  • Biodynamic Viticulture: Domaine Marquis d'Angerville operates entirely under certified biodynamic practices. This rigorous management focus ensures that their cuvées express raw vintage conditions and site transparency, leaning into non-interventionalist cellar techniques to let each terroir stand on its own.
  • The Les Taillepieds Terroir: The name "Taillepieds" refers historically to the sharp, stony limestone debris that cut the shoes of vineyard workers. Located on a steep upper section of the Volnay slope, this vineyard is marked by thin topsoil sitting over hard limestone gravel. This geology forces the roots deep and produces a focused, mineral-heavy profile known for high structural tension and a chiseled framework rather than soft volume.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir hand-harvested from estate-owned plots within the highly regarded Volnay 1er Cru "Les Taillepieds" vineyard.
  • Farmed under certified biodynamic methods to maintain natural vine balance and strict soil clarity.
  • Aged traditionally for 15–18 months in fine French oak barrels, utilizing minimal new wood to prevent masking the site's intense mineral focus.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Translucent ruby red with deep garnet highlights.
  • Nose: Fresh, tight, and highly mineral, carrying clean fruit aromas of dark red cherry, wild raspberry, and pomegranate skin, layered over limestone dust, damp earth, and a quiet trace of wood spice.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and linear. A taut entry of sour red berries leads into a centered mid-palate with distinct material structure. Firm, chalky limestone tannins and a piercing vein of native acidity dictate the shape of the wine, finishing bone-dry, steady, and noticeably saline.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–16°C. Maintaining a cellar-cool temperature helps organize the high acidity and keeps the chiseled stone qualities forward.
  • Decanting: A 1-to-2 hour decant is highly recommended to give the firm 2020 tannic core room to breathe and integrate. This wine is constructed around a long-term architecture built to mature in the cellar through 2035–2042.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast with cherry reduction, pan-seared squab, mushroom risottos, or herb-crusted lamb loins.
  • Asian Pairing: Cantonese Roast Duck (明炉燒鴨), Soy Sauce Chicken (豉油雞), or stir-fried sliced beef with ginger and scallions.
