Vineyard & Estate Background
- 91-93 Points Star Rating ★★★★☆ – Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy "Seven barrels were made from 1.05ha, a yield of about 15 hl/ha. Another fine even fresh purple. The nose is more restrained, some walnuts again. There is fine density on the palate, a certain lush quality unusual in 2021, with very good length Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2022."
- Biodynamic Stewardship: Domaine Marquis d'Angerville farms their plots using certified biodynamic methods. Their winemaking approach focuses strictly on minimal intervention, letting the raw elements of each vintage and vineyard site speak without cosmetic modification in the cellar.
- The Les Taillepieds Site: Situated on a steep upper slope of Volnay, "Les Taillepieds" consists of thin, light topsoils heavily dominated by small, broken limestone gravel. This highly specific geology forces the vines to struggle, routinely producing a lean, high-tension, and distinctly mineral-focused wine rather than a rich or rounded Volnay style.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir hand-harvested from estate parcels inside the Volnay 1er Cru "Les Taillepieds" vineyard.
- Farmed under certified biodynamic practices to preserve site accuracy.
- Aged traditionally for 15–18 months in fine French oak barrels, keeping new wood to a minimum to avoid masking the vintage's clear mineral framework.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Translucent, very pale ruby red with sharp white-diamond edges.
- Nose: High-toned, clean, and severe, offering straightforward aromas of crunchy cranberry, red currant, and sour cherry, layered with crushed chalk, white pepper, and a faint note of neutral wood spice.
- Palate: Strictly bone-dry, light-to-medium-bodied, and highly vertical. A taut entry of tart red orchard fruits gives way to a lean, chiseled mid-palate. Prominent, chalky tannins and a sharp vein of native limestone acidity form the core of the wine, closing on a clean, dry, and highly saline finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve cool at 15–16°C. Keeping it cellar-cool focuses the red fruits and prevents the high-strung acidity from feeling detached.
- Decanting: Given the tight, austere layout of this cool vintage, a 1-hour decant is highly recommended if opening anytime soon. This bottle has a traditional, slow-maturing structure built to evolve over the next 8–12 years.
- Western Pairing: Roasted squab, duck breast with tart berry reduction, mushroom tarts, or simple pan-seared pork medallions.
- Asian Pairing: Cantonese Roast Duck (明炉燒鴨), Soy Sauce Chicken (豉油雞), or stir-fried mixed mushrooms with light soy.
