Crafted by winemaker Roberto de la Mota, Mendel Unus 2022 is based mainly on old-vine Malbec from the Finca Mendel vineyard planted in 1928 at around 900 meters altitude, complemented by smaller portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from selected Mendoza sites to build structure and complexity. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermented and then matured around 15–16 months in French oak barriques, resulting in a 14% alcohol wine that combines concentrated fruit with freshness, fine tannins, and a style often described as European-influenced yet distinctly Argentine in character.
Tasting Notes
Aromas center on crushed blueberries, cassis, and dark plums, with hints of dried violets, cloves, cinnamon, and subtle toasted notes from oak. The palate is generous and full-bodied with very smooth texture, firm but ripe tannins, and layers of black and blue fruits; oak aging contributes spicy and toasty nuances on a long, flavorful finish that will respond well to cellaring.
Serving and Cellaring
Serve at 16–18°C in a Bordeaux glass; decant for 1–2 hours in youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet. Enjoy now for its plush fruit or cellar for 8–12 years to gain further complexity; ideal with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, game, and rich dishes featuring dark sauces.
