Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 90–93 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): Spicy aromas of cherry and wild red and dark currant are trimmed in hints of green tea. The super-sleek and refined medium weight flavors possess a lovely mid-palate texture that contrasts somewhat with the slightly lean if impressively persistent finish. This is a wine to cellar as it needs to flesh out and add depth, so my projected range is predicated on allowing it sufficient time in bottle.
- The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Terroir: Located directly below Chambertin on a gentle, east-facing slope. The soils feature well-drained, iron-rich reddish clay interspersed with decomposed Bajocian limestone gravel, naturally imparting a supple, charming fleshiness and aromatic perfume paired with classic Gevrey power.
- Biodynamic Precision & Amphora Maturation: Frédéric Magnien oversees certified biodynamic (Demeter) viticulture across old-vine parcels. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts, followed by an aging regime split between seasoned oak barrels and unglazed terracotta amphorae to preserve pure terroir expression free from intrusive toast or wood tannins.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir from Domaine Michel Magnien’s old-vine plots in Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.
- Certified biodynamic viticulture matured in a balanced split of neutral oak casks and terracotta amphorae.
- A classically balanced, sensual 2021 Grand Cru built for 15 to 25 years of cellar evolution.
Tasting Notes
Deep, brilliant ruby in color, it opens with pure, layered aromas of ripe red cherries, black plums, and dried rose petals, accompanied by nuanced undertones of blood orange peel, forest floor, and crushed limestone. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied and velvety, delivering a succulent core of red and dark fruits framed by fine-grained, polished tannins and fresh natural acidity, culminating in a persistent, harmonious, and mineral-lifted finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stems.
- Decanting: Decant for 1 hour if enjoying young. Prime drinking window 2028 through 2042+.
