From Nikolaihof in Austria’s Wachau, the Grüner Veltliner Federspiel 2021 is a refined 100% Grüner Veltliner sourced from biodynamically farmed vines on loess and gneiss soils along the Danube that impart vibrancy and depth. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2021 vintage—characterized by moderate conditions yielding concentrated yet fresh fruit—undergo long, slow fermentation in stainless steel to complete dryness with full lees contact until immediately before bottling, preserving energy and minerality. Demeter-certified biodynamic since 2006, this production yields a pale straw wine with green highlights and remarkable freshness.

Tasting Notes An unusual, zingy Wachau Grüner Veltliner with butterscotch hints amid green pepper, parsley, and dill aromas, delivering bright lemony acidity on a medium-bodied, creamy finish. The nose reveals bright flint, green apple, and cassis with fresh-herb character. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and refreshing, with stacks of depth, crisp acidity, and flavors of lemon zest, white pepper, and wet stone, leading to a long, snappy finish.

Awards and Accolades The 2021 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel earned 90 points from James Suckling for its unusual butterscotch character with green pepper, parsley, and dill aromas, bright lemony acidity, and creamy finish.

Serving and Cellaring Serve chilled at 8-10°C without decanting to preserve vibrancy. Ideal as an aperitif or paired with light seafood, salads, or goat cheese. Enjoy now through 2030, during which it will develop subtle petrol notes.
