Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2025 Holdaway Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is from the Holdaway vineyard in Dillon's Point, a growing area right on the coast, at the mouth of the main Wairau Valley. Aromatically, the wine exhibits all the pungency and concentration of the area, yet it shows restraint too, and I like that. Here, there is passion fruit, pineapple husk, white pepper, wet linen, chalk and brine. In the mouth, the wine is textural and chalky, long and restrained—it's very good indeed. A classy offering here, it's true to its place but crafted in a sophisticated manner—or perhaps farmed to achieve this. Either way, it's very good. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
- The Holdaway Vineyard Terroir: Located in Marlborough’s coastal Dillons Point sub-region within the lower Wairau Valley. The vineyard sits on young alluvial silt-loam soils layered over deep sand, benefiting from maritime breezes that moderate vine stress, prolong the ripening window, and impart a signature briny, mineral quality.
- Artisanal Blank Canvas Philosophy: Founded by international flying winemaker Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, Blank Canvas champions low-intervention, single-vineyard wines. Fermented cold in stainless steel with selected and ambient yeasts and rested on fine lees, this bottling achieves genuine textural richness without obscuring varietal vitality or site precision.
Highlights
- 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the renowned Holdaway Vineyard in Dillons Point, Marlborough.
- Crafted with extended lees aging to balance racy coastal tension with tactile mouthfeel.
- A benchmark New Zealand single-vineyard bottling; best enjoyed now through 2029.
Tasting Notes
Pale lemon with green reflections, it leaps from the glass with striking aromas of passionfruit, crushed blackcurrant leaf, sugar snap peas, and lemongrass, accented by nuances of sea salt and wet stones. The palate is dry, medium-bodied, and incisive, balancing concentrated citrus and tropical fruit over an electric spine of acidity and subtle lees texture, finishing crisp, laser-focused, and unmistakably saline.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve chilled at 8–10°C in standard white wine glassware.
- Decanting: No decanting necessary; drink straight from the bottle to enjoy its youthful aromatic snap. Best through 2029.
