Earthy Sophistication, Dark Fruit, and Rustic Charm

The 2022 Olivier Leflaive Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge is a beautifully structured, deep, and deeply satisfying red Pinot Noir that highlights the rich, historic side of this famous village. While Chassagne is world-renowned for its whites, its rare reds are true insider prizes that trade light, floral textures for a more muscular, honest, and satisfying character. Benefiting from the excellent warmth and fruit density of the highly celebrated 2022 vintage, it opens with an expressive nose of ripe black cherries, dark plums, and wild strawberries, neatly woven with hints of wood smoke, forest floor, and warm spices. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, velvety, and smooth, showing polished tannins and a juicy core of fruit that leads into a clean, savory, and structured finish.

Terroir & Craftsmanship

  • The Iron-Rich Soils of Chassagne: While Chassagne-Montrachet is famous for its white wines, the lower and southern parts of the village feature deep, reddish-brown limestone soils that are very rich in iron and clay. These unique elements are absolutely perfect for Pinot Noir. They yield a sturdier, darker, and more structured wine than the airy reds found further north, offering a fascinating combination of rustic charm and deep fruit concentration.
  • Olivier Leflaive's Technical Mastery: Although primarily celebrated for their legendary white wines, the winemaking team applies the exact same rigorous, high-standard attention to their rare red cuvées. The Pinot Noir fruit is harvested entirely by hand, destemmed to avoid any green or bitter flavors, and fermented in open vats. It is then aged for up to 14 months in premium French oak barrels, rounding the rich dark fruits and smoothing the natural tannins to capture the solar energy of the 2022 vintage.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir estate-harvested from select, iron-rich village plots within Chassagne-Montrachet.
  • A rare, highly characterful red Burgundy that delivers fantastic structure, deep dark fruit, and savory complexity.
  • A beautifully rounded, deeply satisfying expression highlighting the ripe fruit of the outstanding 2022 vintage.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep ruby-red core with clear, bright crimson flashes at the rim.
  • Nose: Open, rich, and wonderfully savory. It immediately opens with aromas of ripe black cherries, plums, and wild strawberries, layered beneath with notes of wood smoke, baking spices, forest underbrush, and wet stone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully velvety. The entry brings a juicy wave of dark orchard fruits, followed by polished, fine-grained, and solid tannins that add excellent structural presence. A fresh line of natural acidity balances the solar weight of the vintage, driving into a clean, long, and beautifully savory finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–16°C. A gentle, cellar-like chill highlights the dark cherry fruit purity and perfectly shapes the wine's structured tannins.
  • Decanting: A brief 30-minute decant is highly recommended if opening young to allow the savory spices and deep fruit layers to fully open up. Built to cellar beautifully over the next 5 to 8 years.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-roasted pork belly, beef stews, or earthy mushroom tarts.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck with savory plum sauce, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), braised beef brisket, or wok-fried beef with ginger.
