Chiseled, Stony, and High-Vibrational

Hailing from the historic slate-and-quartzite amphitheater of Kiedrich, this VDP.Erste Lage (Premier Cru) masterwork from Weingut Robert Weil is a masterclass in modern, high-tension dry Riesling. While its legendary sister vineyard, Gräfenberg, is known for opulent weight, the 2022 Turmberg focuses on pure, crystalline mineral drive. It opens with an aristocratic, vertical bouquet of crunchy green apples, lemon oil, wild mint, and wet stone, framing a medium-bodied, bone-dry palate carried by a piercing line of vibrant acidity and an exceptionally long, salty finish.

Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation

  • 96 Points – James Suckling: "Stunning racy brilliance and wet stone minerality are married to complex aromas of white peach, hibiscus and a hint of mangosteen. So fine and precise, so light-footed and subtle for the impressive concentration. Mountain stream clarity at the super-long finish. Drink or hold."
  • 94 Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2022 Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken comes from the 3.8-hectare cru that is classified as VDP.Grosse Lage but internally as VDP.Erste Lage with reference to the own history. It opens with a coolish, precise, deep, stony and almost flinty bouquet due to the phyllite soils of the steep slope and intermingles these with ripe yellow stone fruit, lemon and floral aromas. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, very pure and elegant, mouth-filling yet structured and saline Turmberg with serious terroir expression and the intensity of the vintage. Bottled at the end of July like the Klosterberg and the Gräfenberg. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2023."
  • The Blue Capsule Masters: Founded in 1867, Weingut Robert Weil is universally recognized as the absolute crown jewel of the Rheingau. Instantly recognizable by its iconic Tiffany-blue labels, the estate is led today by Wilhelm Weil, the fourth generation of the family. Weil is famous for treating his VDP.Erste Lage (Premier Cru) plots with the exact same obsessive detail as his Grand Crus. The Turmberg site sits on a highly distinct, shallow vein of stony slate and phyllite-quartzite, yielding a dry Riesling celebrated by collectors for its incredible mineral precision, racy velocity, and crystalline longevity.
  • 100% Riesling estate-selected from the steep VDP.Erste Lage (Premier Cru) Kiedricher Turmberg vineyard.
  • Vines are rooted in unique, shallow matrices of mica-phyllite slate mixed with heavily weathered quartzite stone fragments.
  • Fermented slowly and meticulously inside temperature-regulated stainless steel vats to encapsulate the ultimate mineral and primary fruit clarity.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Pale straw-gold with star-bright white-platinum flashes.
  • Nose: Lifted, linear, and crystalline, opening with intense aromas of crunchy green apple, lemon skin, and white peach, layered with crushed gravel, wild mint, and white blossoms.
  • Palate: Strictly bone-dry, medium-bodied, and highly vertical. Piercing, snappy citrus pith and orchard fruit elements surge onto the palate, immediately carried forward by a chiseled line of native quartzite acidity. The texture is focused, clean, and tight, expanding into a long, dry, and mouthwatering finish loaded with mineral salt.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve chilled at 9–11°C. Avoid serving it ice-cold, which compresses its beautiful, stone-fruit aromatic delineation.
  • Decanting: Not strictly required, though a quick 10 minutes to breathe helps the intense mineral focus broaden out beautifully. Ready for absolute gastro-pleasure today, with the structural focus to cellar comfortably over the next 10–12 years.
  • Western Pairing: Pan-seared trout with almonds, fresh goat cheese tarts, roasted poultry with lemon-herb butter, or fresh oysters.
  • Asian Pairing: 水晶蝦餃皇 (Premium Steamed Prawn Dumplings / Har Gow), 蒜蓉粉絲蒸大扇貝 (Steamed Scallops with Garlic and Glass Noodles), or 潮州凍蟹 (Chiu Chow Cold Crab).
