Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 98 pts
Wine Advocate 97 pts
  • 98 Points - James Suckling: Inky in the glass with almost no rim. Aromas of cloves, coconut, graphite, dark lush bramble fruit, plums and cherries. Full-bodied with great concentration of fruit and a super-dense and velvety palate. Extremely rich, but balanced by crisp acidity and thick yet dynamic and chewy tannins. Amazing finish of salted chocolate. A superpower Amarone with grace. Try from 2026. Will age for decades.
  • 97 Points - Monica Larner (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta takes wine intensity to almost unthinkable levels. That's the magic of this estate, and without a doubt, this wine occupies a category that makes it totally unique on the Italian wine scale. Made with a traditional blend of 60% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 10% Croatina and 10% Oseleta (aged in French and American new oak for two years), the wine feels even richer, bolder and more concentrated in this classic vintage. That general intensity is applied to the tightly wound and firm tannins as well. The alcohol reading is 16.5%. This Amarone hits the market in 2023, but you'd do well to age it for another decade at least. Black fruit, baked plum, tobacco, soy sauce, grilled herb and sweet spice are generously folded into the wine's full-bodied texture. The 2016 vintage saw 17,000 bottles created.
  • The Renowned Monte Lodoletta Terroir: Located in Illasi, eastern Valpolicella, the Monte Lodoletta vineyard features deep gravelly-clay alluvial soils. The site’s unique microclimate yields thick-skinned Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta, and Croatina grapes with rare concentration and high-acid structural backbone.
  • Uncompromising Appassimento Craftsmanhip: Grapes are meticulously hand-selected and dried naturally for up to three months before slow fermentation and 36 months maturation in 100% new French oak barriques, resulting in an iconic wine legendary for its power and long-term aging capacity.

Highlights

  • A masterclass blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Oseleta, and Croatina dried via traditional appassimento.
  • A monumental 2016 vintage offering cassis, dark chocolate, espresso, graphite, and velvety power.
  • Crafted by the legendary Dal Forno Romano estate, boasting 30+ years of cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Opaque, near-black ruby with deep, luminous crimson-purple highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Brooding, complex, and expansive. It opens with aromas of crème de cassis, dried figs, and dark plum liqueur, layered with dark cocoa, roasted espresso, tobacco leaf, graphite, and dried violets.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and monumental. The entry brings a concentrated wave of black fruit sap that glides across massive, ultra-polished tannins, supported by vibrant acidity and an endlessly long, resonant finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C to allow its dense texture and complex aromatics to uncoil gracefully.
  • Decanting: A generous 1-to-2 hour decant is highly recommended to let this powerhouse open fully. Cellar-worthy through 2050+.
  • Western Pairing: Slow-braised beef short ribs, venison roast, osso buco, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano and Gorgonzola.
  • Asian Pairing: Dongpo braised pork belly, Xinjiang cumin lamb, braised beef brisket, or rich soy-sauce stewed meats.
