Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Burghound 89-91 pts
Jasper Morris 90-92 pts
- 89-91 Points (Outstanding) - Burghound (Allen Meadows): A slightly more deeply pitched nose is comprised by notes of plum, violet, cool earth and a hint of anise. Here too there is a relatively refined mouthfeel to the nicely vibrant and appealing textured medium-bodied flavors that possess slightly better depth on the persistent finish. This is a very good Morey villages that is also fashioned in an understated style.
- 90-92 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): Medium deep purple. Slightly more aromatic charm here, a darker fruit, still with the characteristic spice of the vintage, but much more dark raspberry fruit covering the bones and the firmer finish. For me, a clear step up from the Chambolle-Musigny. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted Nov 2022.
- Home-Turf Terroir of Morey-Saint-Denis: Nestled between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis naturally synthesizes the earthy structure of the former with the silky floral elegance of the latter. Sourced from estate-owned plots on clay-limestone soils, this village bottling displays the true heart of the appellation.
- Organic Mastery at Domaine Taupenot-Merme: Led by sibling team Romain and Virginie Taupenot, this Morey-Saint-Denis-based estate spans 13 hectares across prestigious Burgundian appellations. Practicing organic viticulture, they employ minimal extraction and disciplined oak usage to allow each vineyard’s unique geological identity to shine through unadorned.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir organically farmed from prime estate village plots in Morey-Saint-Denis.
- A radiant 2021 expression combining dark plum fruit, violet florality, and cool earthiness.
- Crafted by the renowned Domaine Taupenot-Merme, celebrated for their pure, terroir-focused winemaking style.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Translucent, bright ruby-red core with energetic crimson reflections at the rim.
- Nose: Fresh, cool, and aromatic. It opens with aromas of dark plums, wild raspberries, and dried violets, accompanied by notes of damp earth, tea leaf, and subtle anise spice.
- Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully balanced. The entry brings a vibrant wave of red and dark berry fruit supported by fine-grained, supple tannins. Driven by lively natural acidity, it finishes clean, persistent, and harmonious.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle chill preserves the energetic berry fruit and highlights its floral aromatics.
- Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute decant is recommended to allow the aromatics and subtle earth notes to uncoil. Enjoy now through 2031+.
- Western Pairing: Roast duck breast, pan-seared pork tenderloin with herbs, veal cutlets, wild mushroom risottos, or mild soft cheeses.
- Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), soy sauce chicken, or delicate pan-fried pork dumplings.
