Ethereal Red Fruit, Floral Perfume, and Silky Premier Cru Precision

The 2021 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru "La Riotte" is an exceptionally graceful, airily perfumed, and finely detailed red Burgundy that captures the pure, cool-climate energy of the vintage. Sourced from stony Premier Cru soils, it opens with high-toned aromas of fresh wild raspberries, red cherries, rose petals, and subtle forest earth. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and precise, offering crystalline red berry fruit framed by cashmere-soft tannins.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound 91-93 pts
Jasper Morris 91-94 pts
  • 91-93 Points (Outstanding) - Burghound (Allen Meadows): This is also relatively perfumed with its notes of violet, red and dark berries if perhaps not quite as pretty and airy as the nose of the La Combe d'Orveau. There is fine mid-palate volume to the seductively textured, round and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that possess very good richness before culminating in a dusty, austere and sneaky long finish. This should benefit from a few years of keeping and then be approachable young if desired.
  • 91-93 Points ★★★☆☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): Mid purple. The nose is a little sterner and stricter than the Combe d’Orveau. A central core of firm red fruit, particularly spicy/peppery at the finish, a fresher red fruit, redcurrant and raspberry, yet with good length. Drink from 2027-2032. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted Nov 2022.
  • The Stony Terroir of La Riotte: Situated just below Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis, *La Riotte* sits on stony, shallow limestone soils filled with small rocks ("riottes"). This excellent natural drainage and stony makeup provide Pinot Noir vines with exceptional mineral tension and floral perfume, yielding one of the most elegant Premier Crus in Morey-Saint-Denis.
  • Organic Mastery at Domaine Taupenot-Merme: Led by sibling team Romain and Virginie Taupenot, this Morey-Saint-Denis-based estate spans 13 hectares across prestigious Burgundian appellations. Practicing organic viticulture, they employ minimal extraction and disciplined oak usage to allow each vineyard’s unique geological identity to shine through unadorned.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir organically farmed from the stony La Riotte Premier Cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis.
  • A radiant 2021 expression combining red berry purity, floral lift, and energetic limestone minerality.
  • Crafted by the renowned Domaine Taupenot-Merme, celebrated for their pure, terroir-focused winemaking style.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Translucent, bright ruby-red core with energetic crimson reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Lifted, open, and airily perfumed. It opens with aromas of wild raspberries, red cherries, and dried rose petals, accompanied by notes of subtle forest earth, tea leaf, and crushed limestone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and remarkably silky. The entry brings a crystalline wave of red berry fruit that glides over fine-grained, cashmere-soft tannins. Driven by vibrant limestone acidity, it finishes long, focused, and mineral-accented.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle chill preserves the energetic red fruit and highlights its delicate floral perfume.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute decant is recommended to allow the bright aromatics and limestone tension to unfold. Cellar-worthy through 2033+.
  • Western Pairing: Roast duck breast with cherry reduction, pan-seared veal cutlets, herb-crusted pork tenderloin, or wild mushroom risottos.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), soy sauce chicken, or delicate pan-fried pork dumplings.
