Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound 90-93 pts
Jasper Morris 93-95 pts
  • 90-93 Points (Outstanding) - Burghound (Allen Meadows): This is also aromatically ripe yet cool with its layered and very pretty nose of various red berries, spiced tea and just turned earth. The palate impression of the medium weight flavors is not quite as refined yet it's seductive all the same while exhibiting fine length on the more powerful and generous finish. This is also lovely and understated in style. One to consider.
  • 93-95 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): Medium deep crimson purple. Sterner stuff on the nose. Then the dark red fruit swells on the palate, forming a fine backbone to the wine, with refined class right at the back, enough tannins to provide structure, but still dominated by the fruit. Red and black together. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2023.
  • The Stony Terroir of La Riotte: Situated just below Grand Cru Clos Saint-Denis, *La Riotte* sits on stony, shallow limestone soils filled with small rocks ("riottes"). This excellent natural drainage and stony makeup provide Pinot Noir vines with exceptional mineral tension and floral perfume, yielding one of the most elegant Premier Crus in Morey-Saint-Denis.
  • Organic Mastery at Domaine Taupenot-Merme: Led by sibling team Romain and Virginie Taupenot, this Morey-Saint-Denis-based estate spans 13 hectares across prestigious Burgundian appellations. Practicing organic viticulture, they employ minimal extraction and disciplined oak usage to allow each vineyard’s unique geological identity to shine through unadorned.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir organically farmed from the stony La Riotte Premier Cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis.
  • A radiant 2022 expression combining plush dark berry fruit, floral lift, and mineral complexity.
  • Crafted by the renowned Domaine Taupenot-Merme, celebrated for their pure, terroir-focused winemaking style.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, translucent ruby-purple core with vibrant crimson highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Intensely fragrant, open, and complex. It opens with aromas of ripe dark cherries, wild blackberries, and dried rose petals, accompanied by notes of subtle forest earth, exotic spice, and crushed limestone.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and remarkably velvety. The entry delivers a plush wave of dark berry sap that glides effortlessly over cashmere-soft, fine-grained tannins. Balanced by vibrant natural acidity, it finishes long, smooth, and mineral-accented.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C. A gentle chill preserves the energetic fruit and highlights its delicate floral perfume.
  • Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended to allow the aromatics and silky texture to fully uncoil. Cellar-worthy through 2035+.
  • Western Pairing: Roast duck breast with cherry reduction, pan-seared venison chops, herb-crusted rack of lamb, or wild mushroom risottos.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck wraps, five-spice roasted pork, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), or braised beef brisket.
