Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- The Sovereign Terroir of Peumo: Sourced entirely from Block 27 of the venerable Peumo Vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley, Terrunyo represents the benchmark reference point for premium Carménère. Nestled alongside the Cachapoal River, the unique combination of alluvial clay soils and cool evening breezes drawing from the Andes allows the late-ripening grape to reach flawless phenolic maturity, transmuting aggressive herbal pyrazines into highly complex, noble spice.
- 94 Points – James Suckling: "Lovely fruit and vibrancy from this carmenere. Red berries, cherries, tapenade, paprika and fine spices. Really well balanced, with good structure and length. This is an excellent value. Drink or hold."
-
91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "The 2023 Terrunyo Carmenere opens with smoky, tobacco-driven aromas with dark spice accents and sweet red fruits. The palate reflects the warm vintage conditions with a sweet-fruited, powerful core that segues to a straightforward, soft finish that falls slightly short of the length and dimension displayed by the 2022 vintage."
Highlights
- 100% Carménère selected entirely from Block 27 of Concha y Toro's historic Peumo Vineyard in the Rapel Valley.
- Grown on ancient alluvial clay terraces, where water retention carefully moderates vine vigor to ensure highly concentrated berry juice.
- Matured elegantly for 12 to 14 months in select French oak barrels, allowing the wood contours to meld with the grape's exotic spice profile.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Intense, deep purple-red with bright violet halos.
- Nose: Intensely open, layered, and varietally pure, exploding with aromas of plum pastry, blueberry compote, and dark cocoa paste, complexed beautifully by graphite pencil lead, white truffle earth, crushed black pepper, and sweet paprika.
- Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and remarkably velvety. Concentrated waves of sweet black fruits slide smoothly across the tongue, lifted cleanly by a integrated vein of refreshing acidity. The mid-palate has magnificent volume and thickness, framed by exceptionally soft, fine-grained wood tannins before resolving into a long, persistent, and graphite-flecked finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at room temperature between 16–18°C. Keeping it slightly cool focuses its deep chocolate core and frames its noble pepper spice layers perfectly.
- Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended to allow the youthful fruit layers and exotic wood spice to integrate and expand. Built with magnificent structural balance to cellar gracefully over the next 10–12 years.
- Western Pairing: Slow-roasted rack of lamb with rosemary, grilled prime ribeye steaks, roasted pork loin with plum sauce, or rich wild mushroom pastas.
- Asian Pairing: 柱侯牛腩煲 (Braised Beef Brisket and Tendon Pot), 蔥爆羊肉 (Sautéed Lamb with Scallions), or 椒鹽排骨 (Salt and Pepper Spare Ribs).
