Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 94 Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2025 Sauvignon Blanc leads with a soft nose of musk sticks and brine, green apple skins, wet linen and green olive tapenade. In the mouth, the wine is tightly coiled and yet textured by pithy phenolics. The length of the flavor is long, as we have come to expect from Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc. This is a superb wine in any vintage. Greywacke is a member of the Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW). 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
- 93 Points – James Suckling: "A flavorful, focused and textural sauvignon blanc with papayas, limes and stones on the nose. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Lively and succulent, with a precise palate and a long finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- The Architect of Marlborough Name: Established in 2009 by Kevin Judd, Greywacke is named after New Zealand's bedrock stone. As Cloudy Bay's first winemaker for 25 years, Judd helped put the region on the global wine map. At Greywacke, he takes a highly boutique approach—relying on prime Southern Valleys vineyards and extended skin and yeast contact to build structural dimension far beyond simple, high-acid white wines.
Highlights
- 100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from low-yielding prime vineyards across the Wairau Plains and the gravelly Southern Valleys.
- Grown under strict sustainability guidelines on old river terrace sediments larded with greywacke stones.
- Fermented predominantly in stainless steel using selected yeasts, with a small portion underwent wild fermentation in old oak, followed by extensive aging on fine lees to build mid-palate weight.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Pale straw-yellow with brilliant, crystalline green flashes.
- Nose: Intensely fragrant and lifted, showing clean aromas of yellow peach, fresh passionfruit, and elderflower, complexed by lemongrass, lime zest, and a refined hint of smoky flint reduction.
- Palate: Dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully textural. Concentrated stone fruit and tropical layers slide across the palate, immediately balanced by a crisp, high natural acidity. The mid-palate carries a lovely waxy texture, leading into a long, vibrant finish marked by an oyster-shell mineral saltiness.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly chilled at 10–12°C. Avoid serving it ice-cold, which mutes its complex leesy layers and tropical perfumed aromatics.
- Decanting: Not required, though opening the bottle 10 minutes prior to pouring allows the subtle, smoky flint notes to expand nicely. Ready for immediate pleasure, with the structural integrity to cellar comfortably for 3–5 years.
- Western Pairing: Goat cheese crostini, pan-seared scallops with asparagus, grilled sea bass with lime, or fresh oysters.
- Asian Pairing: 潮州凍蟹 (Chiu Chow Cold Crab), 鹽酥雞 (Taiwanese Salt and Pepper Basil Popcorn Chicken), or Thai Green Papaya Salad.
