(Jasper Morris Score 92) There is so little topsoil that the vines appear to be planted straight on the stones. The plantings date back to 1988 and 1952 in equal parts. Clear fine bright color, a very stylish nose, racy energy this manages its length and line very well, no problem to taste after the grander Chassagne-Montrachets. The finesse is there, perhaps just a touch of heat at the finish. Tasted: November 2018

At barely 2.5 ha, this remarkable appellation with its evocative name is one of Puligny-Montrachet's smallest, lying next door to the hamlet of Blagny.

History

This plot owes its name to the Burgundy truffle which graced the table of French kings until, in the reign of Francis I, it yielded pride of place to the Périgord truffle. The Burgundy truffle Tuber uncinatum is black on the outside and chocolate-brown veined with white on the inside. Its subtle perfume is highly valued by cooks. The soil in this spot was very well-suited to truffle production in the days when vine-growing was less common here. The old truffle beds, though no longer exploited, still underlie the vines. Our cuvée comes from two equal parcels of vines planted in 1952 and 1986 respectively.

Terroir

The gently sloping site bears poor and rather shallow soil, red in colour, and containing large numbers of small pebbles which give up at night the warmth of stored sunshine. The grapes, as a result, ripen well despite being grown at an altitude (300-330 metres) unusual for 1er cru wines.

Tasting

Highly perfumed in youth, this 1er cru has everything one would expect of a great white burgundy - richness, power, purity, length and, at the same time, the delicacy and elegance which characterise the wines of Puligny-Montrachet.
