Ripe Black Cherries, Crushed Leather, Cocoa, and Sovereign Castelnuovo dell'Abate Opulence

The 2017 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino is a monumental, deeply opulent, and masterfully structured expression from the warm Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone in southern Montalcino. Winemaker Andrea Cortonesi has crafted a Sangiovese of remarkable generosity that tames the heat of the 2017 vintage with vibrant acidity and refined tannic focus. Soaring aromas of ripe black cherries, dark plums, crushed violets, tobacco leaf, cocoa nibs, and savory wild herbs lead into a full-bodied, satiny palate framed by muscular, fine-grained tannins and an endlessly long, mineral-driven finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 94 pts
James Suckling 93 pts
  • 94 Points - Monica Larner (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The Uccelliera 2017 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job showcasing that extra power and brawn of the vintage and the richer textural structure of the southern side of the appellation. The bouquet is up front and beautifully measured with lots of red and purple fruit definition followed by spice, tar and earthiness. What sets this wine apart in this hot and dry vintage is the mouthfeel. It delivers fiber, flesh and soft tannins. The alcohol is a bit much at 15% in this production of 28,666 bottles.
  • 93 Points - JamesSuckling.com: A solid 2017, but there’s tangy freshness to this, and relatively fine tannins that frame the wine nicely. Plenty of ripe fruit. Some fresh mushroom, too. Drink after 2023.
  • Castelnuovo dell'Abate Terroir: Situated in southern Montalcino, Uccelliera’s vineyards sit on steep slopes rich in sandy clay, gravel, and limestone. The warm micro-climate grants Sangiovese rich fruit concentration, while high elevation keeps night temperatures cool to preserve essential acidity.
  • Artisanal Craftsmanship by Andrea Cortonesi: Practicing meticulous, low-yield viticulture, Cortonesi ferments with indigenous yeasts and ages the wine in a combination of Slavonian oak casks (*botte grande*) and French oak barrels. This approach yields a Brunello of immense power, savory complexity, and cellar grace.

Highlights

  • 100% Sangiovese Grosso harvested from estate vineyards in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Montalcino.
  • A rich, powerful 2017 release packed with ripe black cherries, dark plums, cocoa nibs, leather, and wild herbs.
  • Crafted by Uccelliera (Andrea Cortonesi), offering 15 to 25+ years of majestic cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, translucent garnet-ruby with luminous brick-red reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Intensely fragrant, complex, and dark. It opens with aromas of ripe black cherries, dark plum compote, and cassis, accompanied by cured leather, cocoa nibs, dried oregano, pipe tobacco, and crushed limestone.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and satiny. The entry brings an expansive wave of dark fruit sap that glides across a muscular mid-palate, held together by firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant Sangiovese acidity into a long, savory finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C in large Sangiovese/Bordeaux glasses to allow its complex aromatics to uncoil fully.
  • Decanting: A generous 1-to-2 hour decant is strongly recommended if opening young. Cellar-worthy through 2042+.
  • Western Pairing: Florentine T-bone steak (Bistecca alla Fiorentina), slow-braised wild boar ragù, roasted rack of lamb, or aged Pecorino Toscano.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Korean braised short ribs (Galbi-jim), Taiwanese braised pork belly, or charcoal-grilled wagyu beef.
