Citrus Zest, White Peach, Glacial Tension, and Höllenbrand Limestone Purity

The 2024 Weingut Wittmann Gundersheimer Riesling Trocken is a razor-sharp, biodynamic Erste Lage (1G) white from the southern Wonnegau in Rheinhessen. Harvested from the high-elevation, wind-swept Höllenbrand vineyard, it opens with pure aromas of crisp lemon, white peach, crushed limestone, and wild herbs. Medium-bodied and intensely focused, it delivers pristine citrus and orchard fruit over an electric spine of acidity, culminating in a long, chiseled, and distinctly saline finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 94 pts
  • 94 Points - James Suckling: A mountain wine with an almost glacial freshness. Compact and intensely chalky but so straight, with great vibrancy in the long, lemony finish. Vinified in large neutral oak and stainless steel. 100% from the Hollenbrand site. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.
  • The Gundersheimer Höllenbrand Erste Lage: Exclusively picked from the Erste Lage site Höllenbrand in Gundersheim. Located just west of Westhofen, this vineyard represents the higher, cooler, and more wind-exposed western extension of the famous Morstein ridge. With shallow topsoil over solid limestone bedrock, it is consistently among the latest-ripening plots of the estate, resulting in Rieslings of razor-sharp focus and electric tension.
  • Philipp Wittmann’s Biodynamic Precision: Certified biodynamic (Respekt-BIODYN) and crafted with spontaneous ambient-yeast fermentation. Fermented and matured in a harmonious blend of large traditional neutral oak casks (*Doppelstück* and *Stückfass*) and stainless steel, the vinification honors varietal purity and stony limestone energy without cosmetic sweetness or overt cellar influence.

Highlights

  • 100% dry Riesling from the high-elevation Höllenbrand Erste Lage site in Gundersheim.
  • Certified biodynamic viticulture matured in traditional large neutral oak and stainless steel.
  • A cool, chiseled 2024 vintage built for 10 to 15+ years of tension-filled evolution.

Tasting Notes

Pale straw-yellow with shimmering green reflections, it opens with pure, crystalline aromas of lemon zest, green orchard apple, and crisp vineyard peach, interwoven with nuances of crushed limestone, sea spray, and subtle wild herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, straight, and svelte, delivering crunchy citrus and yellow fruit over a firm bed of chalky extract and laser-like natural acidity, culminating in a soaring, persistent, and intensely saline finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 9–11°C in standard white wine stems.
  • Decanting: A brief 15-to-20 minute aeration in the glass allows its taut, cool minerality and citrus aromatics to fully blossom. Best enjoyed now through 2036+.
