Collection: Brokenwood

History Brokenwood Wines was established in 1970 in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, as a passion project by three Sydney solicitors: Tony Albert, John Beeston, and James Halliday, a prominent wine critic. The initial 10-acre vineyard in Pokolbin, originally a cricket ground, was planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Cabernet Franc. The first vintage in 1973 yielded 75 dozen bottles of Shiraz-Cabernet, hand-harvested with assistance from friends and family. Despite the founders' limited viticultural knowledge, the wines garnered early praise. In 1975, a dedicated winery was built, and by 1982, Iain Riggs joined as chief winemaker, expanding production to premium whites like Semillon. Riggs led for 38 years until 2020, when Stuart Hordern assumed the role. Today, the estate spans multiple sites across Australia, producing around 100,000 cases annually.

Viticulture Philosophy Brokenwood adheres to a single-vineyard philosophy, emphasizing terroir expression from premium sites in the Hunter Valley and beyond, including McLaren Vale, Beechworth, and Orange. Vineyards feature diverse soils, such as sandy alluvial for Semillon and clay-loam for Shiraz, with a focus on low yields and site-specific management. Certified under Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, practices include native insectary corridors, mid-row cover crops, solar energy (23% of winery power), and reduced chemical use to enhance biodiversity and resilience. Varieties like Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir are nurtured in the Hunter's warm, humid climate to balance ripeness and acidity.

Winemaking Techniques Under Senior Winemaker Stuart Hordern, Brokenwood employs minimal-intervention methods to preserve fruit integrity. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified by parcel; Semillon ferments in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, aged on lees for texture without malolactic fermentation. Shiraz, such as from the Graveyard Vineyard, undergoes open fermentation and extended maceration, aged in French and American oak (20-30% new) for 12-18 months to integrate structure and spice. The ILR Reserve Semillon matures six years pre-release for complexity. Wines are gently fined and filtered, prioritizing elegance, lower alcohol, and restrained oak.

Critics and Journalist Praises Brokenwood is a Hunter Valley benchmark, consistently earning five stars from James Halliday, who praises its "precision and beautiful line" in wines like the 2016 Tallawanta Semillon, projecting decades of evolution. The Graveyard Shiraz is lauded as one of Australia's finest, with the 2019 vintage scoring 97 points from Halliday for its "dark berry and earth" depth. Wine Spectator awards the ILR Reserve Semillon 94 points, noting its "toasted nut and lime" finesse. Critics commend Iain Riggs' legacy of talent incubation and Stuart Hordern's sustainable focus, with Brokenwood's wines celebrated for longevity, balance, and terroir-driven excellence.
