Collection: Josmeyer

History Domaine Josmeyer, located in Wintzenheim, Alsace, France, was founded in 1854 by Aloyse Meyer, a restaurateur who established a winery to supply his business. The estate, named after his son Joseph Meyer, grew under subsequent generations, with Jean Meyer elevating its reputation in the 20th century. Since 2000, sisters Céline and Isabelle Meyer, alongside winemaker Christophe Ehrhart, have managed the 28-hectare estate. Josmeyer pioneered biodynamic viticulture in Alsace, transitioning in 1999 and achieving Demeter certification by 2004. The domaine is renowned for its five noble grape varieties and commitment to quality, reflected in its motto, “Excellence in Simplicity.”

Viticulture Philosophy Josmeyer's 28 hectares span diverse terroirs, including Grand Crus Hengst and Brand, on clay, limestone, and granite soils. The estate cultivates Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Auxerrois, with vines averaging 35 years old. Fully biodynamic since 2004, Josmeyer employs cover crops, compost teas, and preparations like horn manure to enhance soil vitality and biodiversity. Low yields (30-50 hl/ha) and hand-harvesting ensure concentrated, terroir-driven grapes, with a focus on balancing fruit purity and minerality in Alsace's cool, sunny climate.

Winemaking Techniques Josmeyer practices minimal-intervention winemaking to highlight terroir. Grapes are hand-picked, gently pressed, and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel or century-old oak foudres, avoiding malolactic fermentation for whites to preserve acidity. Wines age on fine lees for 6-12 months, enhancing texture and complexity. The portfolio includes dry wines (Artiste and Le Fromenteau), late-harvest Vendange Tardive, and Sélection de Grains Nobles, with precise vinification ensuring clarity and elegance. Bottling occurs with minimal filtration and low sulfites to maintain varietal integrity.
