Collection: Nicolas Jay

History Nicolas-Jay was founded in 2014 as a partnership between Burgundian winemaker Jean-Nicolas Méo of Domaine Méo-Camuzet in Vosne-Romanée and American music entrepreneur Jay Boberg. Méo, seeking a New World project, and Boberg, a longtime Burgundy collector, identified Oregon's Willamette Valley as the ideal region for world-class Pinot Noir. The first vintage was produced in 2014 from leased vineyards. In 2016 they purchased the 13-hectare Bishop Creek Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA (planted 1989–1993) and later added the high-elevation Own-Rooted vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills. The winery remains a small, hands-on operation with Jean-Nicolas Méo as winemaker and Tracy Kendall as assistant winemaker.

Viticulture Philosophy Nicolas-Jay farms 26 hectares across three estate vineyards (Bishop Creek, Own-Rooted, and Momtazi) plus select long-term contracts in the Willamette Valley's top sub-appellations. All sites are certified organic or biodynamic, dry-farmed where possible, and managed with meticulous attention to canopy and yield. The philosophy is Burgundian in spirit: high-density planting, low yields, and an obsessive focus on site expression rather than power. Pinot Noir dominates, with small amounts of Chardonnay introduced in recent vintages.

Winemaking Techniques Jean-Nicolas Méo applies a Burgundian approach adapted to Oregon fruit. Grapes are hand-harvested, 100 % destemmed, and cold-soaked before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in small open-top fermenters. Punch-downs are gentle and infrequent. New oak is kept low (20–35 %) and sourced from the same Burgundian coopers Méo uses in Vosne-Romanée. The flagship Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is a blend of estate and purchased fruit; single-vineyard bottlings (Bishop Creek, Own-Rooted) showcase terroir. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered after 16–18 months in barrel.

Critics and Journalist Praises Nicolas-Jay is widely regarded as one of Oregon's elite Pinot Noir producers. The 2021 Bishop Creek Pinot Noir earned 97 points from James Suckling (“extraordinary intensity and finesse”) and 96 points from Vinous (Antonio Galloni: “a masterpiece of grace and power”). The 2021 Own-Rooted received 96 points from Wine Spectator. Critics consistently praise the wines’ Burgundian elegance, silky texture, and aging potential, with the estate frequently listed among Oregon's top tier alongside Domaine Drouhin and Beaux Frères.
