From Altesino in Italy's Montalcino, the Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2019 is a refined 100% Sangiovese from the iconic 3.5-hectare Montosoli vineyard on the northeastern hillside, featuring galestro-rich limestone and marly soils at 350-400 meters elevation that impart exceptional elegance and structure. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2019 vintage—marked by warm days and cool nights yielding concentrated yet fresh fruit—undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, followed by 36 months' aging in large Slavonian oak casks to enhance complexity without overt wood influence. Pioneers of single-vineyard Brunello since 1975 and committed to sustainable practices, this production yields a deep ruby wine with garnet edges and profound vibrancy.
Tasting Notes An elegant, mineral-infused red with vibrant dark fruit and refined spice, reflecting Montosoli's limestone terroir. The nose reveals blackcurrant, cherry liqueur, pressed flowers, and hints of graphite and balsamic herbs. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet poised, with plush tannins, harmonious acidity, and flavors of ripe plum, star anise, and crushed slate, leading to a long, velvety finish.
Awards and Accolades
97 Points - James Suckling "Perfumed and beautiful with raspberry and cherry aromas and flavors. Purity like a mountain stream. Medium to full body with ultra-refined tannins that are so polished and beautiful. Goes on for minutes. Lovely and real. Drinkable but better in two or three years."
97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "From a beautiful site that must be seen to be believed, the Altesino 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli is redolent with dark fruit, blackcurrant and crushed slate. The mineral element of Montosoli and its schistic galestro-rich soils comes through beautifully in this vintage to add a linear sense of immediacy and verticality to the bouquet. The mouthfeel is especially elegant, and the wine's acidity is delivered expertly to showcase freshness but more importantly to highlight the quality of the fruit. The effect is very tonic and bright, and you get hints of baked brioche or oven-baked Italian focaccia bread, thanks to careful aging in Slavonian oak. This is a 12,000-bottle release."
Serving and Cellaring Serve at 16-18°C with 60 minutes of decanting to unfold aromas. Ideal with roasted game, truffle pasta, or aged cheeses. Enjoy now through 2040, developing greater leather and earthy depth over time.
