Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 95+ Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The varietal 2021 Amelia Pinot Noir was produced with grapes from Quebrada Seca in Limarí on colluvial soils with limestone. It fermented with around 40% full clusters (this has grown) in open-top vats and matured in Burgundy oak barrels, 18% of them new, for one year. It has 13.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.7. 2021 was a cooler year, and the wine shows it, even if the coastal part of Limarí cushions the effect of the warmer years (like 2020, which was a lot less warm here than in inland parts of Chile; I retasted the 2020 to check the evolution, which is great). It's crunchy and has the nervosity from the stems, floral, perfumed and elegant. It is textured and fresh, varietal, bright and young. 13,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022."
- 95 Points – James Suckling: "A very floral expression of pinot with lavender, chalk and ashes to the red cherries and red berries. Plenty of red fruit on the palate with some fine, chalky tannins and a saline, mineral finish. Around 40% whole bunches. 15% new oak barrels and others are second- or third-use. Marcelo Papa says they are reducing the amount the new oak. Drink now."
- The Limarí Terroir Frontier: Concha y Toro created the iconic Amelia label to seek out the absolute extremes of Chilean terroir under the direction of master winemaker Marcelo Papa. Sourced entirely from the clay-and-limestone terraces of the Quebrada Seca Vineyard, this plot is situated just 22 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. The combination of intense marine breezes, morning camanchaca fog, and rare calcium-carbonate soils strips away heavy fruit weight, resulting in a world-class Pinot Noir shaped by structure, tension, and a signature saline finish.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir grown entirely in the northern, coastal Quebrada Seca Vineyard within the D.O. Limarí Valley.
- Rooted in colluvial clay soils positioned directly over a rich limestone bedrock, giving the wine its distinct chalky tannic frame and salty mineral drive.
- Fermented in open-top vats using a high (40%) whole-cluster inclusion to capture peppery spice, followed by 12 months of maturation in French Burgundy barrels (only 18% new wood).
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Translucent, star-bright ruby red with clear platinum rims.
- Nose: Multi-layered, elegant, and highly perfumed, bursting with red cherry, tart redcurrant, and cranberry fruit, accented by black tea leaves, wild rosemary, tobacco leaf, and a distinct graphite reduction.
- Palate: Strictly dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully energetic. Crunchy red forest fruit flavors move across the tongue, shaped tightly by a firm natural acidity and the gripping, incisive structure of whole-cluster stems. The texture is chalky and focused, carrying into a long finish defined by a persistent, mouthwatering ocean salinity.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly chilled at 14–15°C to highlight its perfumed herbal layers and focus the upright stem tannins.
- Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute open helps the initial whole-bunch nervosity and graphite tones relax and integrate. Highly cellarworthy, with the structure to develop nicely through 2031–2035.
- Western Pairing: An exceptional counterpart for pan-seared or gently grilled tuna steaks, herb-crusted salmon fillet, roasted pork tenderloin with plum reduction, or duck breast salad.
- Asian & Cantonese Pairing: This wine's prominent mineral acidity, lack of heavy jam sweetness, and saline drive act as a beautiful blade to cut through fatty bird skins and rich, gelatinous textures. It pairs flawlessly with 明炉燒鴨 (Roasted Duck), 豉油雞 (Soy Sauce Chicken), or a savory 啫啫滑雞煲 (Sizzling Chicken Claypot with Shallots and Soy).
