Wild Strawberries, Crushed Volcanic Rock, Blood Orange, and Benchmark Etna Finesse

The 2021 Benanti Etna Rosso is a pure, tensile red from a pioneering producer on Mount Etna. Crafted from high-altitude Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, it reveals aromas of wild strawberries, sour cherries, blood orange, and smoky volcanic mineral. Medium-bodied and energetic, it balances crisp red fruit against fine-grained tannins and bright mountain acidity, finishing clean, savory, and remarkably refreshing.

Highlights

  • Authentic Etna blend of roughly 80–85% Nerello Mascalese and 15–20% Nerello Cappuccio from mature bush vines (alberello).
  • Sourced across multiple slopes of Mount Etna (north, east, and southwest) at altitudes ranging from 450 to 900 meters on volcanic sand and basaltic lava soils.
  • Crafted by the historic Benanti family, the founding pioneers of the modern Etna DOC renaissance since the late 1980s.
  • Aged 8–10 months in neutral oak tonneaux and stainless steel to protect pure varietal tension and delicate volcanic minerality.
  • From the balanced, classical 2021 Etna vintage; prime drinking window now through 2031+.

Tasting Notes

Pale, translucent ruby with bright garnet tints, it opens with fragrant aromas of wild strawberries, sour red cherries, and pomegranate, interwoven with orange peel, dried thyme, crushed volcanic rock, and a hint of smoky ash. The palate is medium-bodied, linear, and tensile, offering crystalline red fruit over fine-grained, chalky tannins and energetic mountain acidity, concluding on a persistent, savory, and delicately saline finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy or Nebbiolo stemware.
  • Decanting: A brief 20-to-30 minute aeration in the glass allows its wild floral aromas and smoky volcanic undertones to fully express themselves. Best enjoyed now through 2031+.
