Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 94 pts
- 94 Points - Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The wine shows the warmth and ripeness of the year, especially when compared with the 2021 Macán I tasted next to it, but the results are much better than expected, the nose is harmonious, the palate balanced and the tannins very fine. Overall, it's a triumph over the adverse conditions of the year. A total of 236,067 bottles, 2,110 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in June 2024.
- High-Altitude Sonsierra Terroir: Sourced from vines averaging 32 years old, situated on poor, gravelly, clay-limestone terraces at 483 meters altitude in Rioja Alavesa. The microclimate benefits from cool breezes off the Sierra de Cantabria, producing Tempranillo with exceptional freshness and mineral drive.
- Bordeaux Precision Meets Spanish Icon: Formed as a joint venture between Baron Edmond de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia, the winery applies Bordeaux's first and second wine philosophy to Rioja. The 2022 vintage marks the first year utilizing 100% wild yeast fermentations.
Highlights
- Predominantly Tempranillo (99%) with a touch of early-picked Garnacha from high-altitude Rioja Alavesa terraces.
- A radiant 2022 release offering ripe dark berries, oriental spices, and fine, rounded tannins.
- Crafted by Bodegas Benjamín de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia, possessing 10+ year cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Garnet-ruby core with brilliant purple reflections at the rim.
- Nose: Harmonious and fragrant. It opens with aromas of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and dark plums, complemented by notes of vanilla, oriental spice, toasted cedar, and subtle graphite.
- Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and juicy. The entry delivers a plush wave of dark berry sap that glides across rounded, fine-grained tannins, concluding with a long, elegant, spice-inflected finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C to allow its fine aromatics and supple texture to open fully.
- Decanting: A 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended to let its spice and fruit layers uncoil. Cellar-worthy through 2036+.
- Western Pairing: Roast rack of Iberian pork, grilled lamb chops, paella con carne, or aged manchego cheese.
- Asian Pairing: Duck confit, Mongolian beef, five-spice roasted pork (Char Siu), or grilled lamb skewers with cumin.
