Ripe Black Cherries, Violets, Crushed Limestone, and Old-Vine Chassagne Depth

The 2023 Domaine Bertrand Bachelet Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Lombardes" Rouge is a refined, concentrated Pinot Noir from historic old vines. Located on rich clay-limestone soils near Santenay, it reveals fragrant aromas of ripe black cherries, wild blackberries, dried violets, and subtle forest spices. Medium-bodied and supple, it wraps luscious dark berry fruit around polished tannins and vibrant freshness, finishing savory, long, and exquisitely balanced.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy 90 pts
  • 90 Points - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: Made from vines planted between 1965 and 1972-3. A vivid crimson colour. A full delicious rich red fruit on the nose. Plenty of power but intelligently handled, a good fruit acid balance once again, the tannins very far from rustic. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted Mar 2025 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from the single climat "Les Lombardes," located in the southern sector of Chassagne-Montrachet near the border with Santenay.
  • Planted on rich, reddish clay and Jurassic limestone soils, which provide natural substance, deep color, and velvety textural weight.
  • Sourced from venerable old vines planted over 60 years ago, naturally yielding small, intensely concentrated clusters with outstanding physiological balance.
  • Crafted by Bertrand Bachelet, fourth-generation vigneron celebrated for precision viticulture, low-intervention vinifications, and pure expressions of terroir across the Côte de Beaune.
  • From the expressive, generous 2023 Burgundy harvest; offers lovely immediate charm with the concentration to evolve beautifully through 2033+.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-red with brilliant purple highlights, it opens with seductive aromas of ripe black cherries, wild blackberries, and dark plums, seamlessly layered with dried violets, forest floor, cracked black pepper, and subtle hints of warm baking spice. The palate is medium-bodied, round, and velvety, delivering generous dark and red berry fruit underpinned by supple, fine-grained tannins and balanced limestone freshness, concluding on a clean, lingering, and pleasantly savory mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 14–16°C in generous Burgundy or Pinot Noir stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 25 to 35 minutes prior to serving to allow its dense core of old-vine dark fruit and delicate florals to fully unfurl. Optimal drinking window now through 2033+.
