Ripe Stone Fruit, White Flowers, Crushed Limestone, and Sunlit Premier Cru Vibrancy

The 2020 Domaine Bertrand Bachelet Maranges 1er Cru "La Fussière" Blanc is an enticing, rare Chardonnay from the southern Côte de Beaune. Sourced from south-facing limestone slopes, it delivers rich aromas of ripe white peach, yellow orchard apples, citrus blossom, and toasted hazelnut. Medium-bodied and textural, it pairs generous fruit concentration with energetic acidity and a distinct mineral spine, finishing clean, savory, and beautifully sustained.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy 88 pts
  • 88 Points - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: From the upper part of the vineyard which Bertrand feels is better suited to white grapes. Pale clear colour. A little touch of liquorice. The wood (25% new) is maybe showing a touch too much, as evidenced by the drier finish. Some acidity, just lacking a bit of heart in the middle. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted Oct 2022 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay crafted from "La Fussière," widely celebrated as the foremost Premier Cru climat of the Maranges appellation.
  • An exceptionally rare cuvée, as white wine accounts for less than 5% of all production in the historically red-dominated Maranges district.
  • Planted on the higher, steeper sections of the hillside on light Oxfordian limestone-marl soils that promote natural drainage, sun exposure, and mineral tension.
  • Crafted by Bertrand Bachelet, representing the fourth generation of an esteemed winemaking family based directly in Dezize-lès-Maranges.
  • Matured for roughly 12 months in French oak barrels (around 20% new oak) followed by stainless steel settling to preserve crystalline orchard fruit while refining texture.
  • From the warm, concentrated 2020 Burgundy harvest; offers lovely immediate generosity with the stamina to age gracefully through 2029+.

Tasting Notes

Bright, pale gold with crystalline greenish highlights, it opens with pure aromas of ripe white peaches, yellow orchard apples, and lemon peel, elegantly interwoven with white blossom, crushed limestone, and a subtle nuance of toasted hazelnut. The palate is medium-bodied, textural, and energetic, carrying generous stone and orchard fruit across a lively spine of limestone acidity, concluding on a clean, lingering, and delicately saline mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 10–12°C in standard white Burgundy or universal stemware.
  • Decanting: Best enjoyed with 15 to 20 minutes of gentle glass aeration; pairs exquisitely with pan-seared scallops, roasted poultry in tarragon butter, grilled white fish, or mature goat cheeses. Prime drinking window now through 2029+.
