Black Cherries, Wild Raspberries, Earthy Spice, and Premier Cru Concentration

The 2019 Domaine Bertrand Bachelet Maranges 1er Cru "La Fussière" Rouge is a rich, beautifully concentrated Pinot Noir from the southern Côte de Beaune. Grown on south-facing limestone-marl slopes, it reveals aromas of ripe black cherries, wild raspberries, forest floor, and warm spices. Medium-bodied and velvety, it delivers generous fruit depth supported by supple, fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity, finishing savory, long, and elegant.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy 89 pts
  • 89 Points - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: From five plots of varying ages, but predominantly old vines. Rich medium deep purple, with a slightly unusual smoky nose. However, there is a greater depth of sweet raspberry, even some cherry notes, and the wine is fresher on the palate than expected. Tasted Mar 2021 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir harvested from "La Fussière," widely acknowledged as the preeminent Premier Cru vineyard of the Maranges appellation.
  • Cultivated on steep, south-facing hillside slopes of blue and grey Oxfordian limestone-marl, providing optimal drainage and warmth.
  • Crafted by Bertrand Bachelet, the fourth generation of an esteemed winemaking family based directly in Dezize-lès-Maranges.
  • Matured for roughly 12 months in French oak barrels (around 25–30% new oak) followed by settling in stainless steel vats before bottling to harmonize structure and fruit purity.
  • From the celebrated, ripe, and concentrated 2019 Burgundy vintage; drinking with wonderful generosity today and capable of cellar aging through 2031+.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-red with rich garnet reflections, it opens with expressive aromas of ripe black cherries, wild raspberries, and dark plums, seamlessly intertwined with forest floor, dried rose petals, subtle licorice, and a dash of white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied, velvety, and concentrated, coating the mouth in juicy red and dark berry fruit framed by supple, fine-grained tannins and harmonious limestone acidity, concluding on a long, savory, and chalky mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 14–16°C in generous Burgundy or Pinot Noir stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 20 to 30 minutes prior to serving to allow its concentrated old-vine fruit and savory spice to fully expand. Optimal drinking window now through 2031+.
