Ripe Dark Cherries, Wild Raspberries, Earthy Spice, and Sunny 2020 Depth

The 2020 Domaine Bertrand Bachelet Maranges Rouge is a concentrated, authentic village Pinot Noir from the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune. Sourced from clay-limestone soils, it reveals fragrant aromas of ripe dark cherries, wild raspberries, forest earth, and peppery spice. Medium-bodied and fleshy, it delivers juicy fruit depth balanced by smooth, structured tannins and fresh acidity, finishing clean, savory, and persistent.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy 87 pts
  • 87 Points - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: Aged with 10-15% new wood. Full fresh purple, with a dark juicy fruit behind, a little bit of the sun-dried cherries before they become too raisiny. Powerful and concentrated on the palate with a suggestion of raisins but more a very dense black fruit, with good acidity, and just slightly drying tannins. The fruit will win, but this will take time. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted Oct 2022 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir sourced from village-level parcels in the commune of Dezize-lès-Maranges, positioned at the southern limit of the Côte de Beaune.
  • Grown on Jurassic limestone and marl soils with excellent southern exposure, providing natural solar warmth, fine drainage, and lively mineral lift.
  • Crafted by Bertrand Bachelet, fourth-generation vigneron celebrated for precision viticulture and terroir-driven vinification across the Côte de Beaune.
  • Matured for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels (around 20% new oak) before racking into stainless steel vats to polish tannins while retaining energetic red berry fruit.
  • From the warm, concentrated 2020 Burgundy harvest; offering delightful immediate appeal with the structural depth to cellar through 2030+.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby-red with brilliant violet reflections, it opens with expressive aromas of ripe dark cherries, wild raspberries, and cranberries, seamlessly layered with forest floor, dried rose petals, and subtle peppery spice. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy, and harmonious, coating the mouth in juicy red fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and balanced limestone freshness, concluding on a clean, savory, and persistent finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 14–16°C in standard Burgundy or Pinot Noir stemware.
  • Decanting: Best enjoyed with 15 to 25 minutes of gentle aeration in the glass to allow its red fruit perfume and subtle spice to blossom. Peak drinking window now through 2030+.
