Critical Recognition

James Suckling 95 pts
  • 95 Points - James Suckling: A very refined and polished pinot noir with strawberry and raspberry character and subtle hints of coffee bean and cedar. Medium-bodied with berry, light smoke and spice at the end. Really well done. Drink now. Screw cap.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir: Sourced from prime Southern Valleys vineyards in Marlborough, focusing on a premium mix of Dijon clones including 115, 777, and 667.
  • Terroir: Grown on typical Marlborough hillside soils of loess and clay layered over a stony, free-draining bedrock of river gravel and namesake greywacke.
  • Winemaking: The grapes were meticulously hand-harvested, chilled overnight, and rigorously hand-sorted. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with indigenous yeasts.
  • Elevage: After pressing, the wine was racked into French oak barriques (30% new). The individual clones were aged separately for 11 months before final blending and bottling in June 2024.
  • Vintage Profile: The 2024 vintage yielded a beautifully polished, vibrant expression with exceptional energy, clocking in at an elegant 13.2% ABV.

Tasting Notes

Pouring a vibrant ruby, this polished Marlborough Pinot Noir leads with alluring, brooding aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and damson plum layered with cocoa bean and cedar. The medium-bodied palate is intensely focused, juxtaposing sunny, ripe red fruit against nervy acidity and fine-grained, sinewy tannins. Subtle hints of coffee bean, light smoke, and savory spice emerge on the impeccably balanced finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 58-60°F (14-16°C) in a large Burgundy bowl to allow the delicate aromatics and smoky spice to unfurl.
  • Decanting: Not strictly necessary, but 30 minutes in a decanter will enhance the floral and earthy notes. Pair with grilled salmon, duck breast, or earthy mushroom dishes. Closed with a screw cap for pristine freshness; enjoy now through 2032.
