Ripe Black Cherries, Violets, and Legendary Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus Silky Opulence

The 2020 Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves "Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus" is a landmark, deeply velvety, and aromatic red Burgundy from one of the Côte de Beaune's most historic monopole vineyards. Sourced from the sandy, gravelly heart of Grèves, it combines the sunny, concentrated richness of the 2020 vintage with exquisite, silky elegance. Soaring aromas of ripe black cherries, wild raspberries, crushed violets, dark cocoa, and delicate oak spice lead into a medium-to-full-bodied palate framed by ultra-fine, seamless tannins and a vibrant limestone-driven finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 92-94 pts
Jasper Morris MW 90-93 pts
  • 92-94 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): Unfurling in the glass with aromas of blackberries and raspberries mingled with notions of warm spices, rose petals, orange rind and dark chocolate, the 2020 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit that's framed by rich, powdery tannins and succulent acids. It's a terrific effort that should land toward the upper end of my score range.
  • 90-93 Points (Outstanding) - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): This one of the more floral-suffused wines in the range with its hints of violet, rose petal and lavender that add touch of elegance to the very ripe poached plum scents that presently lack a bit of freshness. There is verve and freshness on the palate of the dense, voluminous and punchy flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannins shaping the powerful, serious and mildly warm finale. Note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the nose will recover better freshness.
  • The Historic Vigne de L'Enfant Jésus Monopole: A legendary 4-hectare vineyard situated at the absolute center of the Beaune Grèves Premier Cru slope. Named after a 17th-century prophecy predicting the birth of King Louis XIV, its fine, sandy-gravel soils give Pinot Noir its world-renowned silky texture, fragrant aromatics, and refined longevity.
  • Artisanal Domain Care: Harvested by hand and aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels (with a moderate proportion of new oak). Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils handles this crown jewel of their estate with total precision to safeguard its benchmark silken elegance.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir harvested from the iconic 4-hectare monopole vineyard in Beaune Grèves.
  • A radiant 2020 vintage packed with ripe black cherries, wild raspberries, crushed violets, dark cocoa, and gravelly minerality.
  • Crafted by Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils, offering 15 to 25+ years of monumental cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep ruby-crimson with luminous purple reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Fragrant, complex, and floral. It opens with aromas of ripe black cherries, wild raspberries, and red plum, accompanied by crushed violets, dark cocoa, subtle forest floor, and fine oak spice.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and deeply velvety. The entry brings a silky wave of berry sap that glides across a seamless mid-palate, held in check by polished, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity into a long, majestic finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C in large Burgundy glasses to allow its complex aromatics to uncoil.
  • Decanting: A generous 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended if enjoying young. Cellar-worthy through 2045+.
  • Western Pairing: Roast duck breast with berry reduction, pan-seared pork loin, rack of lamb, beef Bourguignon, or wild mushroom tart.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Char Siu (barbecue pork), Taiwanese braised pork belly, or roast goose.
