Green Apples, Crisp Pear, Crushed Chalk, and Cool-Climate Mâconnais Tension

The 2024 Bret Brothers Mâcon-Verzé Climat "Les Perches" is a tensile, artisanal Chardonnay from northern-exposed slopes in Verzé. Handcrafted with low-intervention principles, it displays crystalline aromas of Granny Smith apples, fresh pear, white blossom, wet chalk, and subtle herbal nuances. Medium-bodied and bone-dry, it combines crunchy orchard fruit with electric acidity and saline drive, concluding on a persistent, mouth-watering mineral finish.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay harvested from the single climat "Les Perches," situated in the village of Verzé at approximately 230 meters elevation.
  • Sourced from 25 to 40-year-old vines grown on cool, north-facing slopes of clay and fossil-rich Jurassic limestone, promoting late ripening and remarkable natural acidity.
  • Produced by Jean-Guillaume and Jean-Philippe Bret (Bret Brothers / Domaine de la Soufrandière), benchmark pioneers of certified organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Mâconnais.
  • Hand-harvested in small crates, whole-cluster pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged for 11 months in neutral seasoned barrels and tank without fining and with minimal sulfur.
  • From the fresh, classical, and vibrant 2024 Burgundy harvest; limited micro-cuvée production delivering piercing mineral clarity with cellaring potential through 2030+.

Tasting Notes

Luminous, pale golden yellow with shimmering green reflections, it opens with cool, taut aromas of crisp Granny Smith apples, firm white peach, and fresh lemon zest, underpinned by crushed chalk, dry biscuits, and subtle wild herbal notes. The palate is medium-bodied, linear, and tensile, balancing crunchy orchard fruit against a piercing spine of cool limestone acidity, culminating in a clean, salivating, and distinctively saline mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 10–12°C in standard white Burgundy or universal stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 15 to 20 minutes prior to serving to allow its cool mineral tension and aromatics to fully unfurl; pairs excellently with fresh oysters, grilled sea bass, steamed turbot, leek quiche, or young goat cheeses. Optimal drinking window now through 2030+.
