Wild Blackberries, Peony, and Sovereign Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru Majesty

The 2021 Domaine Bruno Clair Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a monumental, deeply complex, and aristocratic red Burgundy from one of the most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. Sourced from ancient vines planted on red clay and limestone soils in Morey-Saint-Denis, it seamlessly combines raw power with cool-vintage floral transparency. Soaring aromas of dark wild blackberries, red currants, crushed peony, forest floor, and exotic spices lead into a full-bodied, satiny palate framed by muscular yet finely polished tannins and an endlessly long, chalky finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound 92-95 pts
Wine Advocate 93-95 pts
Jasper Morris MW 93-95 pts
  • 92-95 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): An ultra-fresh and distinctly cool nose displays crystalline pure of red berry fruit along hints spice, floral and wood. The super-sleek and almost painfully intense flavors flash a taut muscularity on the dusty, highly compact and very austere finish that goes on and on. This overtly powerful wine is backward to the point of being grumpy and I would strongly advise not touching a bottle for at least a decade.
  • 93-95 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has also turned out very well, mingling notes of sweet red berries and cherries with hints of rose petals and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's pure and precise, with a bright spine of acidity and a more tensile, mineral profile than the richer, fleshier Clos de Bèze.
  • 93-95 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): A crimson colour. The Bonnes Mares went through its malolactic fermentation early (in January) which makes the bouquet softer and more open. But this wine is generous, gregarious, and very classic in its wilder shores of Chambolle fashion. Wonderfully sensual, then a touch more structure to bring up the finish correctly. Drink from 2028-2036. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Dec 2022.
  • The Legendary Bonnes-Mares Terroir: Located in the northern portion of Chambolle-Musigny bordering Morey-Saint-Denis, Bruno Clair’s parcel lies on the "terres rouges" (iron-rich red clay over hard limestone). This unique soil gives the wine its signature power, dark fruit density, and wild earthiness.
  • Artisanal Craftsmanship by Bruno Clair: Farmed organically with meticulous care and old-vine holdings (some planted in 1946 and 1980). Partial whole-cluster fermentation and judicious barrel aging preserve the pristine fruit purity and classical mineral backbone of this iconic Grand Cru.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir harvested from old Grand Cru vines in Bonnes-Mares, Côte de Nuits.
  • A radiant 2021 release packed with dark wild blackberries, red currants, crushed peony, raw cocoa, and limestone minerality.
  • Crafted by Domaine Bruno Clair, offering 15 to 25+ years of monumental cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, glowing ruby-purple with brilliant crimson highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Expansive, complex, and dark. It opens with aromas of dark wild blackberries, ripe plums, and red currants, accompanied by crushed peony blossoms, forest floor, raw cocoa, and subtle fine oak spice.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and deeply concentrated. The entry brings a dense wave of dark berry sap that glides across a muscular mid-palate, held in check by powdery, fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity into a long, majestic finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–16°C in large Burgundy glasses to allow its complex Grand Cru aromatics to uncoil.
  • Decanting: A generous 1-to-2 hour decant is strongly recommended if opening young. Cellar-worthy through 2046+.
  • Western Pairing: Roasted rack of lamb, venison saddle with berry reduction, beef Bourguignon, or wild mushroom risotto.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, Taiwanese braised pork belly (Lu Rou Fan), charcoal-grilled wagyu beef, or roast goose.
