From Concha y Toro in Chile’s Cachapoal Valley, the Carmín de Peumo Carmenère 2021 is a refined 100% Carmenère sourced from pre-phylloxera vines planted in 1993 on deep clay-loam soils at 170 meters elevation along the Cachapoal River, where the terroir’s moisture retention and moderate climate foster opulent ripeness and elegance. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2021 vintage—characterized by moderate conditions yielding concentrated yet fresh fruit—undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 18 months' aging in French oak barrels (100% new) to enhance depth and integration. This iconic expression, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Carmenère’s rediscovery in Chile, yields a deep ruby wine with vibrant intensity and harmonious poise.
Tasting Notes An elegant, opulent red with ripe red berries and refined structure, reflecting Peumo’s clay-loam terroir. The nose unveils violets, strawberries, raspberries, and hints of spice and herbs. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and seductive, with vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and flavors of red fruit, clove, and subtle earthiness, leading to a long, persistent finish.
Awards and Accolades The 2021 Carmín de Peumo earned 93 points from Decanter for its seductive vision of Carmenère with ripe red fruit opulence.
Serving and Cellaring Serve at 16-18°C with 45-60 minutes of decanting to enhance aromas. Ideal with grilled beef, roasted lamb, or aged cheeses. Enjoy now through 2035, developing greater leather and earthy nuances over time.
