Terroir & History
- The "La Comme" Terroir: Located at the northernmost edge of the Santenay appellation, "La Comme" sits immediately adjacent to the iconic vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet. The soils here feature a high concentration of oolitic limestone mixed with heavy red clay, a combination that famously creates red Burgundies with firmer shoulders, denser tannins, and a deeper mineral footprint.
- The Maltroye Vision: While based in Chassagne-Montrachet under the superb direction of Jean-Pierre Cournut, Château de la Maltroye brings the exact same elite standards of viticulture to their plots in Santenay. To master the exceptionally rich concentration of the 2018 vintage, Cournut employed gentle extraction during fermentation, balancing the natural structural muscle of the terroir with a beautiful, dark-fruited clarity.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir harvested from the premier cru slopes of "La Comme" in Santenay, bordering Chassagne-Montrachet.
- Crafted by Jean-Pierre Cournut, a highly acclaimed winemaker celebrated for precision and depth.
- The 2018 solar vintage provides gorgeous, full-bodied concentration and dark fruit layers that drink beautifully now but will continue to evolve gracefully.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, clear ruby-red with hints of garnet reflections at the rim.
- Nose: Engagingly complex and savory. It opens with intense aromatics of dark cherries, blackcurrant, and dried bramble berries, intricately layered with forest floor, leather, and wood smoke, rounded out by subtle baking spices.
- Palate: Bone-dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and robustly structured. The palate is flooded with concentrated flavors of dark red fruits and spiced plum, firmly bound by a chalky, mouth-coating tannin profile. A sturdy spine of acidity provides excellent balance, lifting the dense core into a long, earthy, and highly savory finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at cellar temperature (15–16°C). Keeping it slightly cool ensures the concentrated fruit remains sharp and prevents the structural tannins from feeling rustic.
- Decanting: A 45-to-60 minute decant is highly recommended. The firm, muscular tannins from the Santenay clay and limestone benefit beautifully from oxygenation, opening up the complex tertiary earth notes. It will age effortlessly in a cellar through 2032+.
- Western Pairing: Roasted duck breast with an earthy cherry reduction, slow-braised beef short ribs, grilled rib-eye steaks, or a rich venison stew.
- Asian Pairing: Peking Duck (北京烤鴨), slow-braised pork belly (東坡肉), or stir-fried beef medallions with black pepper and mushrooms.
