Dark Cherries, Violet Perfume, Velvet Tannins, and Benchmark Volnay Nobility

The 2021 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots-du-Milieu" is an aristocratic, finely sculpted Pinot Noir from the premier heart of Santenots. Crafted from historic biodynamic vines, it reveals fragrant dark cherries, wild raspberries, crushed violets, and warm spices. Medium-bodied and seamless, it pairs succulent red and dark fruit with velvety, fine-grained tannins and classic cool-vintage tension, finishing with exceptional length and mineral focus.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Allen Meadows (Burghound) 90–92 pts
Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy) 91 pts
  • 90–92 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): Here the nose is firmly reduced and revealing nothing. Otherwise there is good punch on the lighter weight flavors that possess lovely delineation while displaying focused power on the firm, serious and austere finale. This is an excellent example of 'power without weight' and a wine that should repay up to a decade of keeping.
  • 91 Points - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): No new wood. The last year of the old destemmer. Not very deep in colour. The cherry fruit is most appealing, without the greater density of some vintages. But there may be a finesse missing in the 2017. Floral notes as well, some acidity, and a little pepperiness. Very attractive for the medium term, will hold thereafter but not necessarily gain. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Jul 2023 by Jasper Morris MW.
  • The "Santenots-du-Milieu" Terroir: Located within the prime center cut of the Santenots climat (situated technically in Meursault but entitled to the Volnay Premier Cru appellation for red wines). Its iron-rich, red clay-limestone soils produce a Pinot Noir with the depth and muscle of Pommard married to the fragrant finesse of Volnay.
  • Domaine des Comtes Lafon Craft: Renowned as one of Burgundy's greatest estates, Comtes Lafon farms this benchmark plot biodynamically. The 2021 vintage emphasizes purity, moderate extraction, and discreet oak maturation to let the terroir's signature velvety texture shine.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir from the sweet spot of Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots-du-Milieu".
  • A vibrant, classical 2021 vintage built to evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 18 years.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby-red in color, it opens with pure, lifted aromas of dark cherry, wild raspberry, and crushed violet petals, subtly framed by baking spices and damp chalky earth. The palate is medium-bodied and velvety, carrying a concentrated core of red and dark berry fruit across fine-grained tannins and vibrant, mouth-watering acidity, finishing long, poised, and remarkably fresh.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy glassware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 45 to 60 minutes if enjoying in its youth. Best from 2028 through 2040+.
