The 2023 wine is sourced from two emblematic Maipo Alto vineyards: the century-old Pirque Viejo Vineyard in D.O. Pirque and El Mariscal Vineyard in D.O. Puente Alto. Concha y Toro’s 2022 technical sheet for The Master shows the estate style clearly: 18 months in French barrels and wooden vats, with a cool Maipo climate and rocky alluvial soils that help preserve freshness and structure. The 2023 version is reported by Vinous as an 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc blend from Región de Valparaíso, which suggests there may be a label or source variation to note.
Tasting Notes
Expect black cherry, cassis, blackberry, cedar, and a smoky edge on the nose. On the palate it is velvety and full-bodied, with firm tannic structure, dark fruit, chocolate, espresso, vanilla, and a long finish marked by spice and minerality. The overall style is concentrated but refined, with lively acidity balancing the ripe fruit.
Awards and Accolades
Concha y Toro reported that The Master 2023 earned 91 points from Robert Parker Wine Advocate. Gold Medal from Decanter World Wine Awards.
Serving and Cellaring
Serve at about 16–18°C, ideally after a short decant. This is a wine that should drink well now for its richness and polish, but it also has the structure to age further in bottle. It pairs well with grilled steak, lamb, roasted meats, and hard cheeses.
