Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 97 pts
Jasper Morris 93-95 pts
Wine Advocate 93-94 pts
Burghound 92-94 pts
- 97 Points - James Suckling (Stuart Pigott): The nose of this very beautiful Corton-Charlemagne transports me to an Alpine meadow, when all the wild flowers are blossoming. I love the restrained, citrusy richness that is effortlessly interwoven with the stony minerality on the medium- to full-bodied palate of this graceful, yet highly-structured wine. Still quite tight at the very salty finish, but so much to give. From a 3.65 hectare plot at the very top of the hill of Corton, directly below the forest with a yellow mark soil. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.
- 93-95 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): The Bouchard holding in Le Corton is made up of white marl on top of limestone slabs, and protected by the forest from the evening sun. Pale lemon and lime. The nose is slightly backward, delicate little flowers, but with the correct stony, almost gravelly aspect. Some riper fruit notes putting their heads above the parapet. A significant saline character too, behind. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2023.
- 93-94 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): Aromas of pear, green apple, white flowers and wet stones introduce the 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a deep, medium to full-bodied wine that's taut, chiseled and racy, with excellent depth at the core and an abundance of chalky structuring extract. As usual, it derives from the domaine's holdings on the Ladoix side.
- 92-94 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): Distinctly cool and restrained aromas of Granny Smith apple, spice and plenty of citrus elements are framed in just enough wood influence to mention. There is almost painful intensity to the larger-bodied flavors that display a taut muscularity and plenty of minerality on the very dry, youthfully austere and impressively long finish. This is presently an impenetrable block that needs more complexity but the Bouchard CC is a wine that ages effortlessly and thus should have no trouble developing more depth over time.
- High-Elevation White Marl Terroir: Sourced from Bouchard’s premier 3.65-hectare plot at the top of the slope directly below the forest, where yellow marl and limestone pebbles above bedrock give the wine exceptional freshness and mineral drive.
- Centuries of Domain Heritage: Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of Burgundy's most historic houses. Their organically farmed Corton-Charlemagne holdings are renowned for producing wines of effortless grace, power, and long-term aging capacity.
Highlights
- 100% Chardonnay organically farmed from prime plots at the very top of the Corton slope.
- A radiant 2022 Grand Cru combining vibrant alpine florality, restrained citrus fruit, and salty minerality.
- Crafted by the historic Maison Bouchard Père & Fils, boasting impressive cellaring potential over 15 to 20+ years.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Pale lemon-yellow with brilliant greenish reflections at the rim.
- Nose: Airily perfumed, floral, and precise. It opens with aromas of wild meadow blossoms, green apple, pear, and citrus zest, complemented by cold wet stones and subtle oak framing.
- Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and beautifully structured. The entry delivers a concentrated wave of orchard fruit and citrus sap before a silver bead of limestone acidity takes over, finishing long, chiseled, and distinctly saline.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 11–13°C to allow its concentrated texture and complex aromatics to uncoil fully.
- Decanting: A 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended if opening early to let the tight acidity and stony structure soften. Cellar-worthy through 2038–2045+.
- Western Pairing: Pan-seared turbot, lobster Thermidor, roast veal chops in cream sauce, or seared sea scallops with lemon butter.
- Asian Pairing: Steamed grouper with ginger and spring onions, butter-braised king prawns, or Cantonese roast poultry.
