Dark Cherries, Forest Floor, Velvety Tannins, and Classic Pommard Depth

The 2023 Domaine Glantenay Pommard is an expressive, beautifully structured Pinot Noir showcasing the classic muscular charm of this Côte de Beaune village. It reveals enticing aromas of dark cherries, wild blackberries, underbrush, and subtle wood spice. Medium-to-full-bodied and supple, it balances dense dark fruit with fine-grained, structured tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long, savory, and mineral-driven.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris MW 90 - 92 pts
  • 90 - 92 Points - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): The vines are in Poisots, Cras, Riottes (thick red marl which gums up in wet years) . Another fine ruby purple. The fruit is not particularly expressive but is obviously there. Very nicely balanced, a serene expression of almost velvety pinot then a couple more tannins than the Volnay has. A fine caressing fruit to finish. Really very good. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Oct 2024 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir harvested from historic village-level parcels in Pommard, renowned across the Côte de Beaune for producing reds with generous fruit density and age-worthy structure.
  • Grown on iron-rich clay-limestone soils over hard Jurassic limestone, lending the wine its classic earthy complexity, deep color, and robust backbone.
  • Crafted by Domaine Glantenay, applying meticulous parcel care and gentle extraction to balance Pommard’s natural power with elegance and refined texture.
  • Aged for approximately 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels (around 20–25% new oak) to soften the tannins while preserving pure dark berry aromatics.
  • From the expressive, generous 2023 Burgundy harvest; offers appealing accessibility alongside the density to cellar gracefully through 2034+.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby with violet reflections, it opens with expressive aromas of ripe black cherries, wild raspberries, and blackberries, supported by touches of forest floor, dried rose petals, and subtle baking spices. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied and structured, carrying concentrated dark fruit across a bed of fine-grained, ripe tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long, savory, and mineral-flecked.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 15–17°C in standard Burgundy stemware.
  • Decanting: Best enjoyed with 30 minutes of gentle aeration in the decanter or glass to allow its firm structure and dark fruit depth to expand; pairs wonderfully with roasted duck, braised beef cheek, grilled lamb chops, or aged cheeses. Optimal drinking window now through 2034+.
